Lady Tigers win 6th consecutive; control HHS

HILLSBORO — Knowing they must be near perfect the rest of the season in South Central Ohio League games, the McClain Lady Tigers didn't disappoint the fans who traveled to see them at Hillsboro on Wednesday night.
The Lady Tigers (5-2, 9-3) fended off an aggressive Hillsboro Lady Indians squad to gain a 54-32 SCOL win at Hillsboro High School. On the same night, the Lady Tigers gained some help for a league rival as Miami Trace defeated Washington 38-31, giving MHS a tie for second place in the SCOL at 5-2 with the Lady Blue Lions. Clinton-Massie leads the SCOL standings at 6-0 in league games.
The win was the Lady Tigers' sixth consecutive win as they have defeated London, Whiteoak, Unioto, Madison-Plains, Miami Trace and HHS in that span.
Speaking of the Lady Falcons, the Lady Tigers will face them this Saturday at MHS, with the Lady Tigers having their second opportunity to face CM this season.
"It's a game where if anybody else is looking at it, they would say the pressure is on us because we have two losses … to go down three, we'll have to depend on someone else to knock them off three times," Overstake said. "So, we need to take care of our business on Saturday and hope that a couple other teams will step up and cause them some problems, but we can't rely on that.
"We just have to do what we have to do on Saturday. We can't look ahead, and we have to prepare for each game as they come. We have three tough ball games next week with Massie, Jackson and Washington in a span of seven days. We have to be able to play within ourselves and play our ball game."
As for the game Wednesday, the Highland County rivalry matchup was close at the beginning with Hillsboro (1-6, 3-10) and McClain tied at 10 after the first quarter, followed by HHS taking the lead in the second frame only to see the Lady Tigers begin what turned into a runaway win with MHS leading by 10 points at the halfway mark of the game.
MHS increased their 25-15 halftime advantage to a 42-21 lead after three quarters. In the final eight minutes, MHS outscored the host Lady Indians 12-11.
Leading the Lady Tigers were four players who scored at least 10 points. Rooks and Mullikin each scored 11 points; and Tara Karnes and Shania Massie each added 10 points. Perie led the Lady Tigers in rebounds with 11, while Massie had five steals and Taylor Faulconer led MHS with four blocked shots.
[[In-content Ad]]"Both Tara and Brittany did a nice job," Overstake said. "We were getting out-rebounded, so in the second half we switched to the zone, which allowed us to do things the man-to-man defense wouldn't allow us to do."
In the aforementioned first quarter, Rooks and Mullikin put the Lady Tigers ahead 6-0 with 3:30 left in the opening quarter. The lead turned into an 8-2 advantage, but a late run by Hillsboro's Hannah Kibler and Trista Rhodes eventually tied the score at eight, then at 10 to end the first eight minutes of play.
"I was real pleased with our effort offensively and defensively," HHS head coach JR Moberly said. "We put a few wrinkles in because Coach Overstake had seen us play a few times. Mostly, our kids played hard, and our intensity was good at the start of the game."
Hillsboro gained the lead to start the second with a jumper by Kibler, who led all scorers with a game-high 12 points.
"Hillsboro's kids played a nice game (Wednesday)," Overstake said. "They are out there playing hard like they always do, and they haven't let up any. Coach Moberly still has them going in the right direction."
HHS held the lead for just over a minute, until the duo of Mullikin and Taylor Faulconer put MHS back in the lead around the six-minute mark.
"Right at the start of the second, (McClain) went to a zone and that allowed them to put three post players in, which created some matchup problems for us," Moberly said. "With those three in, we didn't get second chances, and we didn't get a chance to stretch the floor out."
The run by MHS eventually turned into a 15-3 run to end the quarter, en route to a MHS lead of 25-15 at halftime. Seven of the 15 points of the run were scored by Karnes.
"There were a couple times where they were trapping us, and we just didn't take care of the ball," Overstake said. "We need to take care of possession of the ball better than we did here and at Miami Trace."
McClain dominated the third quarter at 17-6 with Massie scoring seven of her 10 points in the quarter. Rooks added five points in the third, while Mullikin, Jenna Perie and Karnes all scored points in the quarter.
In the third at the 2:48 mark, Rooks connected three consecutive times at the free-throw line in one trip as she was knocked down while attempting a three-point basket. For MHS in the third quarter, they were 6-of-9 from the free-throw line.
Massie sank her second 3-pointer in the fourth quarter, and teammates Kate Crabtree, Kaitlyn Faulconer, Mullikin and Karnes all added to the Lady Tiger total.
The fourth frame was the Lady Indians' highest-scoring quarter as Taylor Stanforth, Whitney Earley, Kibler, Carey Juillerat and Kaylynn Bell all scored points.
HHS will play again on Saturday afternoon with a JV start at noon when they host the Washington Lady Blue Lions in SCOL play.
In JV play Wednesday, MHS defeated HHS 29-19. Leading the Lady Tigers was Karnes with seven points.
