WASHINGTON C.H. — It took two different days, 11 innings and one solo home run, but the McClain Lady Tigers withstood everything the Washington Lady Blue Lions threw at them to seal a 3-2 South Central Ohio League victory Monday.
The game first began a couple weeks ago as it was rained out in the top of the third with no score. On Monday, the game restarted and continued into extra innings until Caitlyn Lovett sent the ball over the left field fence for a one-out home run on an 0-2 count for her first hit of the game in the top of the 11th for the eventual win.
In the bottom of the 11th, McClain's Cierra Landrum allowed a lead-off single, but it didn't haunt the Lady Tigers as she struck out the next batter and the game ended on a tricky double play as Lovett dove and knocked down the ball near first base and tossed it to Morgan Dettwiller at first for the second out of the inning, and with the Washington runner staying at first, Dettwiller ran the runner down going to second and got her out on the tag for the third and final out.
MHS moves to 10-5 overall and 5-4 in the SCOL. Washongton falls to 3-5 in the SCOL.[[In-content Ad]]"Everyone made plays, and our defense was outstanding the whole game," MHS head coach Jarrod Haines said, who became a father for the first time this past week. "We battled when we needed to.
"Right now, I'm not worried about the standings. We just have to do what we need to do. We're young, and we are getting better. Remember, we had to replace most of the team, but this group is working hard, and the results are showing."
With the start on Monday beginning in the third, Washington was first to score as they added runs in the third and sixth innings for a two-run lead.
For Washington, Boyd scored on a sacrifice bunt by Warning in the third, and Warning scored one run in the sixth as she scored on an RBI double by Hawk, who sent the ball to centerfield on a 2-0 count with one out.
McClain's two runs came in the top of the seventh as they came with just one out left on their side.
The top of the seventh began with Katy Unger taking first on an error with one out, followed by Anna Ehlers reaching first on a base hit. Following the second out, Alli Willett doubled to left field to score both runners as that hit was her fourth of the game. Willett finished 4-for-5 with two singles and two doubles.
One inning where the Lady Tigers' defense kept the game going was the bottom of the eighth as Washington had a runner on third base with one out. With the runner on third, the ball went past third base, but MHS recovered as Unger fielded the ball and tagged the Washington runner out at third, tagging her foot for the second out of the inning. The out took all the momentum out of the Lady Blue Lion rally in the eighth, as the final out of the inning came on a ground out to second.
MHS left a runner stranded at third in the eighth inning.
In the bottom of the ninth, the third out was a play at the plate as Massie tagged out a Washington runner off a throw from Unger at third base.
MHS totaled nine hits in the two-day game as Landrum, Shania Massie and Unger also had hits throughout the game. Massie forced the lone MHS walk.
Hayes, Warning and Jude each had two hits for the host Lady Blue Lions, with Hawk and Sara Lentz each collecting one hit.
Landrum was the winning pitcher as she pitched all 11 innings, including nine on Monday, as she allowed two runs (one earned) on eight hits and one walk, striking out nine.
"The story of the game was the pitching by Cierra," Haines said. "She refused to quit."
The loss went to Lentz as she, too, pitched a complete game. Lentz allowed three runs (one earned) on nine hits and one walk. Lentz struck out nine.
"Lentz kept us off-balanced, and hats off to her," Haines said. "She can pitch."
There isn't much time for rest as the Lady Tigers and Lady Blue Lions will face each other in SCOL play on Tuesday at MHS. First pitch is scheduled for 5 p.m.
