DODSONVILLE — Though it was a closely played game at times, the McClain Lady Tigers were able to keep the host Lynchburg-Clay Lady Mustangs at bay, and in the process, they won the non-league volleyball match on Monday night.

MHS won by scores for 25-16, 25-17 and 25-12 to take home the win over their Highland County counterpart.

"The girls were able to control the tempo of the match, and that led to the win," MHS head coach Emma Gall said. "We've improved our play, plus our communication has stepped up.

"Our serve-receive is much better, and we are on the upswing that we need."

The first match was as close as 19-16 in the latter stages, but MHS was able to score six consecutive points to win the first set by a 25-16 score.

A big part of the first set win was points from Malea Montavon and Sydney Barton, as Montavon scored the 20th point and sealed the win by pushing the ball over the net away from LC players.

Barton scored the 21st points. Points 22-24 came with LC either hitting the ball out of play or hitting their own side of the net.

The second set was tied four times at 2, 3, 5 and 6, but from there, MHS outscored the Lady Mustangs, 19-11 to win set two.

In the second set, LC's Kylie Camp tied the score at two, and then the score was tied at 5-5 with Kelcey Smith making a block at the net.

Later in the set, Allie Orr-Zody scored four consecutive aces for the Lady Tigers to put them ahead 19-9. LC made it a 19-11 score when Shelby Marshall spiked the ball towards the direction of the Lady Tigers.

"Allie's serves were very good," Gall said. "Her serving in the second set was big."

LC got to within five points of tying the score when Morgan Gray scored a point, but from there it was all MHS, as they won the second set when LC hit their own side of the net for what was McClain's 25th point.

"We are just too young right now, and it shows," LC head coach Mark Faust said. "We don't handle adversity well, because when one thing goes wrong, it spirals.

"Having no seniors hurts. We start two freshmen and play five freshmen consistently. It is up to us to start finding ways to win. Once we find those ways, it will be a different situation."

The Lady Mustangs began with a few consecutive points in the third set, taking a 4-0 lead with the help of serves from Makayla Creed.

Smith scored the first point for MHS in the third set, and that was followed with Orr-Zody spiking the ball for a 4-2 score. Later, the score was tied at 4-4 with a block at the net by Smith, and she put MHS ahead with a spike.

LC came back to tie the score at five, but from there, MHS never trailed as they took a 13-6 lead, only to have LC's Hannah Magie score the seventh point of set three for LC.

MHS really jumped ahead in the latter stages of set three with an ace by Barton and a point from Smith for a 19-10 lead.

The Lady Tigers ended the set and match with five consecutive points scored with three aces by Sara Bennett, and LC hitting the ball out of play for points 24 and 25.

"For us to come back after homecoming and not practicing for three days … it was a good way to start the week," Gall said.
