Lady Tigers run away with consecutive SCOL championships

WASHINGTON C.H. — For the second consecutive season, the McClain Lady Tigers are softball champions of the South Central Ohio League, and even though they have clinched the outright championship with an 8-0 win Wednesday against the Washington Lady Blue Lions, they still have some unfinished business left in the league.
As of Wednesday, the Lady Tigers have two SCOL games remaining on the slate, as they are currently undefeated in league play at 10-0 with two league games on the slate, including Friday when they host Clinton-Massie and Monday, April 30 when they host Miami Trace.
MHS (17-3 overall) hasn't lost an SCOL game since their league opener last season.
"The girls have worked so hard for this, and our goal was to be league champions again," MHS head coach Jarrod Haines said. "Now our goal is to go undefeated in the league, and that is where our focus is at right now.
"We won 11 in a row last season and 10 in a row so far this season, and the girls know how it feels being one run away last year from being perfect in the league. Our seniors have shown great leadership, and that is where our focus comes from."
Wednesday's game started somewhat slow for the Lady Tigers, and even though their one run in the top of the first inning proved to be enough, they didn't score most of their runs until the fifth and sixth innings.

The first MHS run was scored with Cierra Landrum doubling to start the game with a slap bunt, and she eventually scored on a passed ball. Landrum, the MHS lead-off hitter, led MHS at the plate, going 4-for-4 with three runs.
MHS opened the fifth, in which they sent 11 batters to the plate, with a walk by Sasha Lawwell, and with one out, Landrum singled toward third base with a slap bunt. Shania Massie scored both runners with a three-base hit on a line drive to centerfield, putting MHS ahead 4-0. Massie finished 2-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs.
Still not finished, Jenna Perie reached the bases on a single, with Massie rushing home for the fifth MHS run of the game. Courtesy runner Sarah Thompson and Morgan Dettwiller (who singled) both scored on a double by Emily Sterling, putting MHS ahead 6-0.
For good measure, the Lady Tigers added two more runs in the top of the sixth with Massie and Thompson rounding the bases.
"I want to credit the Washington C.H. pitcher as she kept us off-balanced for the first few innings, but our girls dug in and got the timely hits when we needed them," Haines said. "We strung a few hits together and had two good innings late in the game."
In the circle, Landrum, a junior, pitched seven innings, allowing no runs on three hits and one walk for the win. She struck out six batters and had a no-hitter through four innings.
For WCH, leading them at the plate were Vernon with two singles and Depugh with the first WCH hit of the game in the bottom of the fifth. The loss drops the Lady Blue Lions to 5-5 in the SCOL and 7-11 overall.
Earlier this season in Greenfield, MHS defeated Washington 10-2.
