Lady Tigers overcome early struggles; defeat Eastern Brown

SARDINIA — From the start of things, the first quarter didn't go in favor of the McClain Lady Tigers Saturday night against Eastern Brown. But the following three quarters was controlled by MHS as they rallied to defeat the Lady Warriors 52-39 at EBHS in non-league play.
The win makes MHS 3-2 overall, and in the past seven days they went 3-1 with wins over Hillsboro, Lynchburg-Clay and the aforementioned win over EB. MHS is 1-1 in the South Central Ohio League.
McClain was held to just two points in the first quarter (they committed 13 turnovers in the same quarter) as they trailed 18-2 following eight minutes of play, but the Lady Tigers returned the favor in the fourth as they held EB to just two points as they added 21 points to their totals.
In the second quarter, MHS outscored the Lady Warriors 20-11, and in the third, MHS had nine points, as their defense held EB to eight.
"We brought in Tara (Karnes) and Shania (Massie) in off the bench to help with different combinations until we found the right one," McClain head coach Dennis Overstake said. "They helped with the JV games, and once we found the right combination, we started to click as an offense."
For the second half, McClain's defense held the Lady Warriors to 10 points, while their offense scored 30.
"The telling part was the fourth quarter where Eastern Brown could make a bucket and our girls made nine free throws in the fourth," Overstake said. "We held their three best scorers to two free throws in the fourth, so we got a lot of help from different players. We had people step up.
"Taylor (Faulconer) covered a lot of the floor with steals and hustle. Jenna was in foul trouble, and Tara came in and played well."
Sammy Rooks led all scorers with a game-high 20 points, going 7-of-12 from the free-throw line, along with five two-point baskets and one 3-pointer. Ten of Rooks' 20 points came in the fourth quarter, and six came in the second quarter.
Shania Massie followed Rooks in scoring with 11 points off the bench. The freshman sank two 3-pointers, with one two-point basket. She shot 3-of-4 from the free-throw line.
Jenna Perie finished with nine points, and Kaitlin Faulconer scored five. Also scoring for the Lady Tigers were: Taylor Faulconer (3), Kate Crabtree (2) and Tara Karnes (2).
MHS was 13-of-24 from the free-throw line.
"After Lynchburg-Clay and Clinton-Massie, we told the girls no matter how our defense is, we still have to score points," Overstake said. "When Jenna came back in the fourth quarter with four fouls and scored four points, that was a big help. We were able to break their press and ended up being able to control the offense."
Four players scored for the Lady Warriors with Allison Prine scoring 12 points and Maria Jackson with 11 points. Also scoring were Andrea Tracey with nine and Emily Turner with seven.
All four EB players who scored each made one 3-pointer.
EB was 5-of-16 from the free-throw line.
The Lady Tigers will take the court again on Wednesday when they are on the road at Washington C.H. to take on the Lady Blue Lions in an SCOL matchup.
