Lady Tigers knock out Lady Golden Eagles

GREENFIELD — What a difference a day can make.
One day after opening the season with a 14-3 loss, the McClain Lady Tigers bounced back in a big way with a 12-6 win over the Madison-Plains Golden Eagles Wednesday in South Central Ohio League play.
MHS scored runs in every inning at the plate, with two runs in the first, followed by a one-run second and two-run third. They then added two more runs in the fourth and four more runs in the fifth, off a three-run home run by freshman Shania Massie.
For good measure, MHS added one last run in the bottom of the sixth.
"Offensively, our bats came alive," McClain head coach Jarrod Haines said. "Tonight our pitching and defense gave us a chance to win the game, and we want that to happen every time we take the field.
"We grew up and got better … the girls stepped up."
MP scored two runs in the second, one run in the fourth and three runs in the sixth.
As for the Lady Tigers (1-0, 1-1), they scored their first two runs with Cierra Landrum hitting a single to lead off the bottom of the first. With one out, Jenna Perie doubled, scoring Landrum. With two outs, Kate Crabtree reached first on an error, and Emily Sterling batted in Thompson (the courtesy runner for Perie) for the second Lady Tiger run. Sterling wrapped up the game 3-for-4 with two RBIs.
For the game, Perie was 4-for-5 with two doubles and two RBIs. In the first two games of the season, Perie is 7-for-8 with a home run and four RBIs.
"The girls hit collectively, and that's all I can ask for as a coach," Haines said. "Defensively, we were solid. Madison-Plains is a good team, but (Wednesday) we put everything together, and we just need to keep improving."
In the second, Perie knocked in Landrum for the third MHS run of the game and a 3-0 lead.
After two runs by MP in the third, MHS responded with two runs of their own with Brittany Mullikin and Sasha Lawwell crossing home plate off a triple by Massie. Massie finished 2-for-4 with a triple, home run, one run and four RBIs.
The fourth added runs by Ali Willett and Thompson (running for Perie), as Perie batted in Willett and Thompson scored on a base hit by Sterling.
Runs in the fifth were scored by Thompson (who totaled four runs), Morgan Dettwiller (reached base on a triple), Lawwell and Massie, with RBIs from Massie, Sterling and Perie.
The final MHS run came in the sixth with Mullikin scoring a run with the RBI from Landrum, who finished 2-for-5 with two runs and one RBI. Mullikin ended the game with a 2-for-4 day at the plate with two runs.
The win in the circle went to Landrum. Landrum as she pitched the complete seven innings allowing six runs (two earned) on four hits and four walks. She finished with four strikeouts.
The Lady Tigers will play again on Thursday, when they are scheduled to face East Clinton (at ECHS) starting at 5 p.m.
