Lady Tigers improve to 2-0; defeat Manchester

BAINBRIDGE — The McClain Lady Tigers continued their early season dominance Saturday evening, defeating the Manchester Lady Greyhounds, 69-35 at Paint Valley High School in the Paint Valley Lady 'Cats Classic.
Coming off a 59-22 season opening win against Highland County rival Whiteoak on Friday, the Lady Tigers continued their trend of balanced scoring with numerous players putting numbers on the board. On Friday, MHS had nine players score at least two points.
But on Saturday, in the next-to-last game of the two-day event at PVHS, the Lady Tigers, once again, dominated a majority of the non-league game.
MHS, the away team, was led by senior Chrissy Cobb with a game-high 24 points, giving the senior point guard 41 points in two games.
In the first quarter, MHS (2-0) led 16-5 with just under 2:00 remaining in the frame, ending the quarter with a 13-point lead at 20-7, after junior Sammy Rooks sank a long-range jumper with less than a minute remaining.
The start of the second was all Lady Tigers, who outscored the Lady Greyhounds 15-6. Cobb and junior Brittany Mullikin added to the MHS lead to start the quarter, en route to a 6-2 Lady Tiger run with senior Frankie Wise capping off the run with two free throws.
McClain increased their lead to 30-13 with four straight points by Cobb, and for the second day in a row, senior Megan Hogle sank a 3-pointer for the final points of the MHS second quarter.
The lone bump in the road for the Lady Tigers came in the middle of the third quarter with the Lady Greyhounds going on a 7-0 run, but the scoring drought of the Lady Tigers was stopped when junior Taylor Faulconer scored a basket for a 42-26 lead.
After Manchester scored a quick two points, Cobb made a jumper and a 3-pointer to put the Lady Tigers up 50-26 with under two minutes left in the quarter.
Leading by 24 points entering the final frame, the Lady Tigers exchanged 3-pointers with Manchester, as Hogle sank her second basket from beyond the arc against the Lady Greyhounds.
Taylor Faulconer and Mullikin each added to the Lady Tiger lead, followed with a long-range jumper by Rooks to put McClain up 61-33.
Cobb gave MHS a 32-point cushion with six straight points, leaving under two minutes remaining in the game, scoring three straight baskets. Wise finished off the scoring by MHS with two free throws.
McClain (2-0) will host cross-county rival Hillsboro Tuesday night at McClain High School. Hillsboro will enter the game at 0-1, falling Friday afternoon to the Lynchburg-Clay Lady Mustangs.
