Lady Tigers homer way past Washington

GREENFIELD — Two home runs mixed into a total of 14 hits were more than enough for the McClain Lady Tigers to keep their perfect mark in the South Central Ohio League intact Monday, as the Lady Tigers defeated the Washington Lady Blue Lions, 10-2.
McClain (4-0, 8-3) scored nine of their 10 runs in the first two innings, with four in the first and five in the second, for what turned into a 9-1 lead after two innings were completed.
"I was really pleased with the way we adjusted to their pitching," MHS head coach Jarrod Haines said. "We've been preaching to hit the ball away, and we did that (Monday).
"Defensively, we made mistakes, but we'll continue to work on that. Washington in a good team, but we jumped on them early."
Though McClain trailed 1-0 after Washington's (1-3, 3-6) first trip to the plate, it didn't last long as Cierra Landrum gained a lead-off single and scored on the next at-bat as Shania Massie smashed a two-run home run on an 0-1 pitch, pushing MHS ahead 2-1. The home run was the fourth home run of the season for Massie.
"We are always good when Cierra starts us off at the lead-off spot," Hanies said. "I'm pleased with the top of the order and overall pleased with how we played."
Jenna Perie continued the inning with a single, and with two outs, Emily Sterling reached on a walk. Brittany Mullikin batted in both runners (Sarah Thompson pinch running for Perie) and Sterling for a 4-1 lead.
The second inning for MHS was even more productive, adding five runs to the scoreboard, with the biggest blast coming from a two-run home run by Sterling.
MHS began the second inning with Alli Willett singling, followed by a base hit by Landrum. Massie doubled, scoring both Willett and Landrum. With one out, Morgan Dettwiller singled, scoring Massie. Next was the home run by Sterling, flying over the fence with two outs.[[In-content Ad]]
MHS scored their final run in the fifth inning with Willett scoring off a two-out double by Massie. Willett reached the bases on a fielder's choice.
For the game, Massie led MHS with a 3-for-4 day at the plate, including a home run, two doubles, two runs and five RBIs.
Also for MHS, Landrum was 3-for-4 with two runs. Sasha Lawwell and Willett were each 2-for-3 as Lawwell hit a double and Willett scored two runs.
Washington's two runs were scored by Taylor Shears and Daejah Seymour in the first and third innings.
The pitching win was credited to Landrum and the loss went to Mykalley Detty.
Landrum pitched a complete game, going seven innings in the circle. Landrum allowed two runs (one earned) in six hits and five walks. She struck out three batters.
