If any school wants to become the next South Central Ohio League champion, they still have to remember who the defending champion of the league is.
That was evident Thursday evening as the Lady Tigers defended their home field by handing the Miami Trace Lady Panthers their first SCOL loss of the season, winning by a 5-3 score.
"We grew up (Thursday)," MHS head coach Jarrod Haines said. "Sure, we made errors, but we made a play after an error, so it didn't hurt us as much."
Miami Trace struck first off a fly ball by Nivea Wilson to the outfield that tipped off the left fielder's glove to reach base safely. Wilson scored off the next batter as Taylor Grooms singled for the RBI.
The Lady Tigers answered with two runs in the bottom half of the first on the 82-degree evening.
Lead-off hitter Alli Willett singled for the host Lady Tigers, followed by Cierra Landrum hitting a single. Willett was knocked in by a Shania Massie base hit. Landrum scored off of a single by fellow senior Morgan Dettwiller.
Miami Trace added another run in the top of the second as Riley reached on an error. She scored when Sears reached the bases on an error.

With score tied 2-2, McClain added two more runs in the bottom of the fourth.
Freshman Savannah Anderson reached base on an error, followed by Willett taking first on another base hit.
Two batters later, Massie knocked Anderson and Willett in with a two-out triple.
MT added one more run in the top of the fifth when a run scored on an overthrow.
The night was capped off with one more run by MHS in the bottom of the sixth as Willett scored on a Sarah Thompson line drive.
Leading hitters for McClain were Willett with three hits, while Landrum, Massie, Dettwiller, Thompson and Katy Unger each had two hits.
"Hats off to Massie, Thompson and Dettwiller," Haines said. "They all three came up with huge hits to knock our runs in, and Willett had three hits ... that was huge."
Picking up the win for the Lady Tigers was Landrum as she went seven complete innings, allowing three runs (none earned) on five hits. The senior struck out six batters.
"Cierra threw lights out (Thursday)," Haines said. "She had total command of her pitches, and she was fun to watch."
