Lady Tigers force OT in loss at Miami Trace

EBER — The McClain Lady Tigers were on the verge of gaining their second South Central Ohio League win of the season, but even in forcing overtime, it wasn't meant to be as they fell 53-49 Saturday night to Miami Trace at MTHS.
The loss to the Lady Panthers (7-1, 10-3) came after the score was tied at 45 at the end of regulation. In the overtime period, MT outscored the visiting Lady Tigers, 8-4.
Scoring in the overtime for the Lady Tigers were Shania Massie with a two-point bucket and Tara Karnes with two free throws.
Though the Lady Tigers move to 3-5 in the SCOL and 5-9 overall, head coach Dennis Overstake, who is five wins away from 500 in his career, was proud of the way his team played.
"We trailed at halftime by six points and by as many as 11 in the third," Overstake said. "We switched our defense, and it helped. We were more aggressive and outscored them in the fourth."
In the fourth, where the Lady Tigers forced an overtime, MHS outscored the Lady Panthers, 11-2, as the two points by MT were via free throws.
In the first three quarters, MT led 13-10 after the first frame and 28-22 at the half, as they outscored MHS, 15-12. In the third, MT outscored the Lady Tigers again, 15-12, as there were six lead changes in the game.

As for the victorious Lady Panthers, they were led in scoring by Abby Schwenk with a team-high 14 points. Deidre McKay followed with 12 points.
For the Lady Tigers, Karnes earned another double-double with 17 points and 11 rebounds.
Massie followed with 12 points (one 3-pointer), and Katy Unger followed with nine points and six rebounds.
"Tara has been collecting double-doubles since the Whiteoak game," Overstake said. "Shania and everyone have been playing better as well. As for Tara, we've got the ball to her inside, and she's responded and been on a roll."
Also for MHS, Lauren Rayburn added five points, Alli Willett totaled four and Sarah Thompson scored two points.
"We've been rotating Alli and Sarah at starts, and Alli was strong in this game," Overstake said. "Lauren also had an excellent game on defense.
"Playing like we did against a team like Miami Trace, we have to have everyone making contributions. Our last two games, we've taken two good teams into overtime, but we just haven't executed well enough in overtime to get the wins."
The Lady Tigers were 14-of-20 (70 percent) from the free-throw line, while MT was 7-of-16.
"We improved on our free-throw shooting, as we've been around 50 percent this season," Overstake said. "Our free-throw shooting kept us in this game."
There isn't much time to rest for McClain as they travel again on Monday, Jan. 14 to face Highland County counterpart Lynchburg-Clay at LCHS with JV play beginning at 6 p.m.
