Physicality was a big part of the South Central Ohio League game Saturday afternoon between the host McClain Tigers and Division II No. 5 state-ranked Clinton-Massie Lady Falcons at McClain Gym.

The South Central Ohio League game had a mix of everything, including a late rally by the Lady Tigers, but the rally fell just short as the Lady Falcons defeated McClain, 46-37.

The Lady Tigers (5-3, 10-5) trailed by 11 points (and at one point in the third by 17 points) at the start of the fourth frame, plus they had to play a good majority of the final eight minutes without junior Shania Massie, who collided with a Lady Falcons player and crashed into some empty sideline chairs and into the bottom portion of the bleachers nine seconds into the start of the fourth.

With Massie on the bench, the Lady Tigers used the heated atmosphere at McClain Gym as motivation as they went on a 7-0 run where they trailed by just four points at 38-34 with 5:58 left in the fourth. Massie returned to the game with 3:27 left in the quarter.

"When Shania went out, we had some kids step up and put some pressure on them," MHS head coach Jarrod Haines said. "That was a difference, and the second quarter really hurt us. We didn't step up and make open shots.

"We had open shots in the second but just didn't knock them down, but in the third and fourth quarters, we had some kids really step up."

Massie led the Lady Tigers with 12 points, all coming in the first three quarters.

That run began with two points from Katy Unger, followed with a layup by Lauren Rayburn. Unger scored two more points, this time with free throws, and following the Lady Tigers forcing a turnover at the 6:18 mark at mid-court, Tara Karnes added to the MHS scoring with a put-back bucket to bring the Lady Tigers within four points of tying the game.

Unger and Rayburn each finished with six points.

"Katy was everywhere offensively and defensively," Haines said. "Lauren hit a huge three for us."

Karnes, who finished with nine points, eventually brought the Lady Tigers to within two points of tying the score with a layup at the 1:37 mark, but they were unable to get any closer as CM made 7-of-8 free-throw attempts in the final 1:25 of the game.

The first quarter was full of defense and very little scoring as MHS led after eight minutes by an 8-5 score, but CM rallied in the second frame by outscoring MHS, 17-5 for a halftime advantage of 22-13.

MHS last held the lead with 3:49 left in the second until Kasey Uetrecht put CM ahead 12-11.

In the third, CM (8-0, 14-0) again outscored the Lady Tigers, 15-13.

"The kids didn't back down," Haines said. "They could have folded when down by 17 points. We don't like to lose, but we learned from this loss. We learned how tough our kids are. They are really tough."

Also scoring points for MHS in the game were Taylor Polley and Sarah Thompson with two points each. Thompson also took a charge in the fourth at the 5:56 mark of the quarter.

MHS finished 11-of-18 from the free-throw line.

For the Lady Falcons, Sydney Brackemyre led all scorers with 17 points. Uetrecht followed with 10 points.
