Lady Tigers drop SCOL title game to Miami Trace

EBER - Unable to contain Miami Trace senior Jenna Cobb, added with injuries at a key moment in the first half, the McClain Lady Tigers were unable to repeat the success of last week, losing their chance at the South Central Ohio League championship to the Lady Panthers 50-35 in a jam-packed Panther Pit at Miami Trace High School.
The SCOL title won by Miami Trace was their seventh straight title, as they have won at least a share of the league title since it reformed in 2004.
The Lady Tigers struggled from the floor as they finished 12 of 31 shooting for 39 percent, while the Lady Panthers were 22 of 44 for 50 percent.
The shooting by MT started in the opening minutes of the championship game with Jenna Cobb knocking down a 3-ball, followed with the Lady Panthers taking a 9-1 lead with points from Josey Hull and Ashley Lawson and finished with an underneath, over the back basket by Cobb.
Cobb finished with a game-high 26 points, as the senior made eight two-point shots, three 3-pointers and was 1 of 1 from the free-throw line.
McClain senior Kate Hammond stopped the scoring with back-to-back 3-pointers to cut the Lady Panthers' lead down to two points with 2:30 left in the opening eight minutes.
But the consistency by Cobb kept the Lady Panthers in the lead as she wrapped up the quarter with a mid-court steal, turning it into two points on a fast break layup, along with a 3-pointer at the 4.6 mark to put MT ahead 14-9 after eight minutes.
After quick points by Miami Trace's Kasey Bryant, McClain senior Cortney Hyer sank a 3-pointer to bring MHS within three points.
MT increased their lead to six as Lawson made a 3-ball. Hammond answered with a falling, off-balanced basket while surrounded by two MT defenders to keep MHS near the MT lead at 20-16.
Then thing started to unravel for the Lady Tigers.
With 4:52 left in the second MHS leading scorer Hammond was injured and did not return for the remainder of the first half as she collided with players on the court, gaining injuries to her mouth.
The Lady Panthers took advantage by going on a 12-4 run to end the first half. Scoring in the run for MT were Bryant, Cobb and Krista Reisinger.
In the first half alone, the Lady Tigers committed nine of their total 17 turnovers.
Hammond returned in the third to bring MHS within 10 points of Miami Trace with a jumper at the 7:17 mark, but her points were equalled by Cobb. Megan Saylor netted a bucket for the Lady Tigers, but again, MT piled on the points by finishing the third with a 12-1 run, taking a 17-point lead at 44-27.
The Lady Tigers won the fourth quarter at 8-6, but the game was controlled by MT.
Saylor netted the first four points of the final frame, but Cobb scored her final six points with three straight jump shots. Saylor finished with 11 points.
Kate Crabtree scored the games final points for the Lady Tigers.
MHS lead in rebounding at 22-19. Jenna Perie and Saylor each grabbed seven boards. Perie also earned three assists.
Hammond finished with a team-high 13 points and five rebounds. Alex Taylor also grabbed a rebound for the Lady Tigers and Chrissy Cobb finished with two points, two rebounds, and two steals.
Shelby Buck netted two points for MHS, along with one block.
MHS was 8 of 11 from the free-throw line, while MT was 2 of 5.
The loss drops MHS to 13-3 overall, 9-2 in the SCOL. MT improves to 17-1 overall, 11-1 in the SCOL.
In JV play, the Lady Tigers defeated MT 37-21. Taylor Faulconer led MHS with 13 points. Brittany Mullikin scored 10 points for MHS.
The Lady Tigers are scheduled to host Unioto Saturday at McClain High School with JV action starting at 12 p.m.
