Lady Tigers add to their SCOL wins, top Lady Indians

HILLSBORO — At one point, the South Central Ohio League contest between the Hillsboro Lady Indians and the McClain Lady Tigers was tied at two runs apiece, but that didn't last long with the visiting Lady Tigers eventually dominating their Highland County rival for a 14-2 win Friday at Alice Cassner Field in Hillsboro.
The win makes the first-place Lady Tigers undefeated in the SCOL at 8-0 and overall at 15-3. HHS falls to 2-7 in league games and 3-14 overall.
"We had a slow start, but we made their pitchers work," MHS head coach Jarrod Haines said. "The bottom of our lineup came through again. I'm really proud of how we finished and how everyone contributed.
"I was pleased with the bench play."
The score was all tied up at 2-2 following the first two innings, as HHS scored two unearned runs in the bottom of the second to even up the score. The runs scored by Kayla Deatley came after Deatley reached the bases on a one-out error and Moberly took first on a single and followed up by stealing second base with Deatley on third. Both runners scored on a two-RBI base hit by Whitney Earley on an 0-1 count.
That was all the scoring by the host Lady Indians, but to tie the game, it was McClain who scored first, adding two runs to the scoreboard early with Shania Massie and Sarah Thompson rounding the bases for the Lady Tigers.
Their top of the first heated up with a one-out walk by Massie, followed with Jenna Perie taking first after being hit by a pitch. The bases were loaded with Morgan Dettwiller taking first on an error.
Both of the Lady Tigers' first-inning runs came via a bases-loaded walk by Kate Crabtree (scoring Massie) and Emily Sterling taking the bases on a fielder's choice, scoring Thompson, who was the courtesy runner for Perie.

The lead became the Lady Tigers' in the third inning with Perie starting things with a single. With Thompson running the bases for the MHS catcher, Dettwiller singled, and Kate Crabtree hit a sacrifice fly, advancing the runners. Sterling grounded out, allowing Perie and Dettwiller to score on not only a ground out, but an infield error committed by HHS.
With a 4-2 lead, MHS added two runs in the fourth with Landrum and Sasha Lawwell rounding the bases with RBIs by Massie and Perie.
Again in the fifth, the Lady Tigers added more runs, this time with three crossing the plate with Crabtree, Sterling (who tallied three RBIs) and Lawwell making it a score of 9-2. RBIs in the inning were from Massie, Brittany Mullikin and Lawwell.
In the sixth, Thompson scored another run with an RBI by Lawwell. In the seventh, MHS added four runs, including a two-run triple by Mullikin.
Leading MHS with two hits apiece were Landrum, Mullikin and Lawwell as each batter went 2-for-4, as Mullikin and Lawwell each had three RBIs.
HHS tallied five total hits.
The win in the circle went to Landrum, who pitched all seven innings, allowing two runs (none earned) on five hits and no walks. She struck out eight.
"Again, Cierra was lights out," Haines said. "Of our 18 games, she's pitched in 17 of them, so she's not had much of a break."
MHS will play again on Saturday in a non-league doubleheader with Western Brown.
