Lady Patriots open season with win
The Southern State Lady Patriots tipped off their 2009-10 season with a home win against Miami University Middletown 69-66 at the Patriot Center last Friday, in Hillsboro.
SSCC led the first half 36-22.
Sophomore Kayla Seip (Whiteoak) led the Lady Patriots with 17 points, scoring 11 points in the first half. Seip was 3 of 4 from the free-throw line, netting two 3-pointers.
SSCC sophomore guard Derickya Massie (Miami Trace) scored 14 points in the season opener. Massie sank two 3-pointers, finishing 2 of 3 from the foul line.
Ashlee Liston (West Union), a sophomore, scored 12 points in the 40 minute game. Liston was 3 of 6 from the free-throw line, making one 3-pointer in the first half.
Caitlin Davis (Clinton-Massie) drained two 3-pointers, finishing with six points against MUM. Hannah Gobin (Connorsville, IN) made three field goals for six points.
Jessica Sexton (Peebles) and Leslie Shoemaker (North Adams) each scored five points. Shoemaker made one 3-pointer and was 2 of 6 from the free-throw line. Sexton made two field goals, going 1 of 2 from the foul line. Kristi Beasley (West Union) finished with four points for the Lady Patriots.
SSCC was 11 of 21 from the free-throw line. The Lady Patriots finished with eight total 3-pointers. SSCC committed 20 team fouls, compared to 14 by MUM. Miami University Middletown ended the game 17 of 34 in free throw shooting.
Shandler Musselman, of MUM, led all scorers with 19 points. Miranda Alsept scored 16 points for MUM.
SSCC was outscored 44-33 in the second half.
