The Southern State Community College women's basketball team opened the second half of the season with a defeat at the hands of UC-Clermont, 78-46.
This was the first game for the Lady Patriots since Dec. 19, and it showed as the first half was very sluggish and slow-paced. Clermont was on top, 33-23 at the conclusion of the first half.
The loss drops SSCC to 3-9 overall as they've defeated Ohio University-Chillicothe 60-50, Ohio Midwestern via forfeit and West Virginia University-Parkersburg, 72-64.
Once the teams came out after halftime, Clermont (10-12) turned up the pace, and SSCC could not keep up.
The Lady Cougars of Clermont went on to score 45 points in the half.
"This has been the problem all year," SSCC women's head coach Matt Wells said. "We can keep up for the first half, but in the second half, we struggle due to our lack of players.
"We have been playing with six players all season. We had a new player join us this semester, but we are still too few."

For the game, Southern State was led by newcomer Kelsey Juillerat (Hillsboro) with 17 points and 13 rebounds for a double-double.
"We could not have asked for a better debut for Kelsey," Wells said.
Mercedes Grisham (Ripley) finished with nine points and 12 rebounds. Grisham is averaging a double-double for the season with 12 points and 13 rebounds.
Also, scoring for the ladies of SSCC were Megan Sword (Fairfield) with seven points, Haley Bingamon (Whiteoak) with five points. Jessica Sexton (Peebles) totaled four points, and Ashley Crone (Whiteoak) and Jordan Beasley (Adams County Christian) each had two points.
For the night, the women shot 19-of-53 for 36 percent from the floor and 5-of-9(55 percent) from free-throw line. SSCC was 3-of-13 (23 percent) from the beyond the arc.
The women's team will be back in action on Wednesday, Jan. 16 vs. Miami University-Hamilton at 5:30 p.m.
"The last time we played Hamilton, they dressed and played 15 players," Wells said. "It will be another team contest for us, but we come to battle every night."
