Lady Mustangs win Wilkin Tourney championship

Though they trailed after the first quarter, that wasn't enough to damper the drive of the Lynchburg-Clay Lady Mustangs as they led at the half and for the remainder of the game, defeating Paint Valley, 45-33 for the Wilkin Memorial Scholarship Tournament championship, Saturday at LCHS.
The win on their home court was a two-day path which led them to wins against Whiteoak and PV for what is now an overall record of 7-2 on the season. On Friday, LC defeated WHS 73-38 as they went 2-0 in the tournament.
The tournament MVP was LC senior Laney Lewis, while both Lewis and Morgan Fittro each made the All-Tournament team.
LC trailed 12-9 after the first quarter, but then their defense kicked into gear as they allowed just eight points over the next two quarter, leading 19-16 at halftime and 32-20 after three quarters as they scored 10 points in the second and 13 in the third.[[In-content Ad]]
In the final eight minutes of the game, LC was outscored 14-13.
Lewis led LC with 18 points as she shot 47 percent from the field. She was 2-of-5 from the free-throw line and tallied a double-double as the senior totaled 10 rebounds, three assists, two blocked shots and one steal.
Fittro finished with seven points, one rebound, one assist and one steal in the win. Ali Little followed with six points (2-of-4 from the free-throw line), five rebounds, one assist and three steals.
Shelby Stewart ended the game with five points (one 3-pointer) and five rebounds. Madison Wills also scored five points with a 3-pointer, while adding one rebound, one assist and three steals. Emma Setty finished with four points and one steal.
Madysyn Creighton totaled one rebound, one assist and three steals. Sarah Rosselott collected three rebounds and one steal.
LC will play again on Thursday, Jan. 3 at home against Fairfield.
