DODSONVILLE — For the Lynchburg-Clay Lady Mustangs, they continued to roll through their Southern Hills Athletic Conference late of games on Wednesday evening, winning under the lights and defending their home field.
The Southern Hills Athletic Conference win came against rival Eastern Brown, with LC (6-1-0) scoring once in the first half and two more times in the final 40 minutes for an eventual 3-1 victory.
"This was a typical Eastern and Lynchburg-Clay game," LC head coach Dennis West said. "It felt like it was a lot closer in the first half than the second. I felt like in the second half, we kind of controlled the tempo.
"We did a much better job of moving the ball and containing them. It felt like most of the game was played on their half, in the second half."
In the first half, it was LC who did lead by a 1-0 score following a goal at the 16:54 mark of the half with Hannah Binkley scoring off a pass from Sam Pierson.
The LC defense held the Lady Warriors scoreless in the first half, a much different story than in their first meeting earlier this season (a non-conference match) that has yet to be completed.
In that match, LC currently trails 5-2 with 4:56 left in the first half, as it will be completed on Oct. 6 at EBHS. In that match (thus far), Kayla Tomlin had four of the five EB goals.
As for the second half on Wednesday, LC outscored the visiting Lady Warriors, 2-1 in the final 40 minutes.
LC took a 2-0 lead with 34:04 left in the second half as Morgan Fittro placed the ball in the back of the net.
[[In-content Ad]]The Lady Mustangs' lead soon went to three goals as Keanna Oaks scored her goal from about 22 yards out with 18:29 remaining in the match.
Eastern did score one goal on Wednesday with Tomlin breaking up the shutout with 7:31 on the second-half clock.
"This was a great effort by the girls," West said. "They've suffered from not playing much in recent weeks, but this was a big game for them. We didn't play well in the game we've yet to finish.
"They (EB) came out and scored, and we looked like we didn't even know the game had started. (Wednesday) was a different story … Angela McLaughlin and Lexi Waits marked the Tomlin girl pretty much the entire match. Those two did a really nice job of keeping her from the net. "
As for more from the LC defense, Bailey Leininger had six saves at goal for LC, and in the second half, Sabrina Duncan had two saves for the Lady Mustangs.
In total, LC took 22 shots at goal, while EB had just seven shots at goal and 15 total saves. For what is their past two games, the LC defense has allowed just one goal in 160 minutes of soccer. LC last played on Monday, Sept. 8 before their Wednesday evening win.
LC will host the Ripley Lady Blue Jays on Friday, and the girls JV and varsity teams will play Saturday at Zane Trace.
