SEAMAN - The Lynchburg-Clay Lady Mustangs made things interesting in Division I of the Southern Hills League last Thursday as they gained a bit of revenge, on the road, by defeating the North Adams Lady Green Devils 44-40.
The game was almost a mirror image of their first meeting from an intensity stanpoint, but this time around the Lady Mustangs came out on top with timley free throws from Lindsey Hawk, who put LC up two possessions with nearly 20 seconds remaining in the final frame.
The SHL clash was tied at 11 after the first quarter, and the Lady Green Devils led 24-21 at halftime, netting 13 points in the final eight minutes of the first half.
"We played decent in the first half, but we improved by reducing our turnovers from the first time we played them," Lynchburg-Clay head coach Linda Hatten said. "The first time we played, we committed 35 turnovers, but this time we had 19. So limiting the opportunities North Adams had possession was huge."
The Lady Mustangs were held to single digits in the third, but the defense of LC torched the Lady Green Devils to single digits as well, with LC winning the quarter 8-7.
LC won the final quarter 15-9 to tie the SHL Division I standings with NA and Eastern Brown.
"In the second half we picked things up defensively," Hatten said. "Brooke did an outstanding job guarding (Karli) Bealey as four of her 11 points were from the free-throw line. The third was key as we held them to single digit scoring."
Lynchburg-Clay senior Cali Hatten led LC with a game-high 13 points. Hatten shot 75 percent from the free-throw line and 50 percent from the field. The senior also had five rebounds.
LC junior Lillian Blankenship finished with 10 points, scoring five times from the field. Blankenship also gained seven rebounds and six steals.
Senior Lindsey Hawk earned nine points, making one two-point basket, one 3-pointer and four free throws. Hawk was 4 of 6 from the free-throw line, finishng with six rebounds and three assists.
"Lindsey's free throws were critical," Hatten said. "Before she took the shots I called a time out and set up what we wanted to do if she missed the shots. Before the time out was over I told Lindsey she would make these shots and she went out an made both of them."
Sophomore Brooke Hertlein scored eight points on four field goals. The sophomore led LC with nine rebounds and also recorded two blocks.
Junior Meredith Fittro and freshman Laney Lewis each scored two points.
"We needed this game to stay in the hunt for the league title," Hatten said. "We have two league games remaining with Ripley and Fayetteville this week."
Hatten said she feels as the season progresses, her team has matured and she is proud of how they are playing as of late.
"I believe our defense has picked up," Hatten said. "In games where we haven't scored points, our defense holds on until we pick things up. The girls have matured on the court. Brooke and Laney have stepped up and improved as the season continues.
"Our rebouding has improved as well. I am real pleased with how we are playing."
