FAYETTEVILLE — The Lynchburg-Clay Lady Mustangs are now just one win away from clinching no less than a share of the Southern Hills Athletic Conference championship for the second consecutive year.
In fact, if they win their final two SHAC games, they will clinch the golden soccer ball for the second straight season by staying undefeated in the conference.
How did they continue the path to that feat?
On Wednesday at Fayetteville High School, the Lady Mustangs moved to 5-0 in conference play with an outright dominating win against the Fayetteville Lady Rockets, winning by a 9-0 score.
"The girls just came out ready to play (Wednesday)," LC head coach Dennis West said. "We usually don't have it as easy as this on Fayetteville's field. We are playing at a very high level right now, and I'm getting great play from everybody that we put on the field.
"It doesn't matter if it is a freshman, sophomore, junior or senior … they are just playing well, and our passing is really good. The movement of our passes is just outrageous. We are just clicking right now and playing well."
By halftime on Wednesday, the Lady Mustangs had the victory well in hand, tallying a six-goal lead after the first 40 minutes.
LC's scoring barrage began with senior Sydney Cromer putting the Lady Mustangs on the board first with a goal from around 25 yards out with 29:11 on the clock. That goal was assisted by Keanna Oaks.
Shelby Chisman followed with a goal at the 27:53 mark, at an angle from around 18 yards out for the two-goal advantage.
Ali Little made it a 3-0 score with 23:25 left in the first half with a goal off a rebound that was initially kicked by Angela McLaughlin for the assist.
McLaughlin then scored one of her three goals on the night, with her first one at the 21:48 mark of the opening half, with the assist from Chisman.

A little over seven minutes later, LC took a 5-0 advantage with McKayla Binkley scoring her goal from 35 yards out that landed in the back of the net. Her goal was assisted by Alexa Cochran.
The final goal of the first half (9:08) came off the foot of Hannah Binkley with the assist by Oaks for the six-goal lead.
The second half saw three LC goals, two from McLaughlin (33:39, 17:45) and one by Cromer (20:30).
LC outshot their opponent, 23-4, with Bailey Leininger having three saves at keeper and Sabrina Duncan with one save.
As for the opportunity at the undefeated league title, if LC wins vs. Fairfield on Friday and at North Adams on Wednesday, they will be undefeated SHAC champions for two straight seasons.
"We are taking this like the old cliché … one game at a time," West said of the conference undefeated record. "We've got to make sure we don't overlook anybody, and they are up to it by the way they are playing right now."
Eastern Brown trails LC in the standings with a 5-1 SHAC mark, their lone loss to LC on Sept. 17 by a 3-1 score.
