Lady Mustangs slow down in loss to Peebles

DODSONVILLE — The two-game winning streak by the Lynchburg-Clay Lady Mustangs was snapped on Monday night, due in large part to a third frame where they were outscored by 13 points. LC was unable to defend their home court in a 58-46 Southern Hills League loss to the Peebles Lady Indians.
LC trailed by nine points after the first quarter by a 19-10 score but managed to outscore PHS 11-5 in the second quarter as the Lady Mustangs trailed 24-21 at halftime.
Then came the third quarter where LC was outscored 20-7, but rallied in the fourth to lead PHS 18-14.
Brooke Hertlein led LC in scoring with 18 points, including one 3-pointer and seven two-point baskets. She was 1-of-2 from the free-throw line. Hertlein added nine rebounds, three assists and two steals.
Laney Lewis followed with 17 points with eight two-point field goals. She also made one free-throw. Lewis tallied a double-double with 16 rebounds (five offensive) with four blocked shots and three steals.
Karen Hilt finished with five points (one 3-pointer), while adding three rebounds, two steals and one blocked shot.
Emma Setty scored four points, three rebounds, two assists and one steal. Ashley Tenas finished with two points and two rebounds.
Morgan Fittro collected four rebounds, two steals and one assist.
LC totaled 17 two-point field goals, two 3-pointers and were 6-of-14 from the free-throw line. LC also added (team totals) 37 rebounds, six assists, 10 steals, five blocked shots, 16 fouls and 22 turnovers.
The loss drops LC to 3-4 overall and 1-3 in the SHL. PHS improves to 5-2 overall and 4-1 in the SHL.
LC will play again in the Highland County Shootout on Wednesday as they will travel to Hillsboro to take on the Lady Indians at 8 p.m.
