Lady Mustangs open season with win over Peebles

PEEBLES — The 2012 girls soccer season for the Lynchburg-Clay Lady Mustangs opened up with a shutout win, as LC defeated the Peebles Lady Indians 6-0 in a non-league contest.
In what was the non-league match between the two Southern Hills League teams, the LC Mustangs held PHS scoreless as senior Emma Setty totaled four saves (LC outshot PHS 24-3) in the win.
On the offensive side of the field, Sydney Cromer and Sarah Spidel each scored two goals for the Lady Mustangs as LC led 2-0 after the first 40 minutes and added their final four goals in the second half.
"This was a good first match," LC head coach Dennis West said. "Our defense played well throughout the match.
"Our offense did a much better job in the second half, and our passing and movement was very good."
The first goal of the season for LC came early in the opening half with Taylor Scott dribbling past the PHS defenders and driving the ball into the back of the goal for the 1-0 lead.[[In-content Ad]]
That ended up being all the goals needed for LC, but they added more to their total with Cromer scoring at the 29:00 mark of the first half for the 2-0 lead.
In the second half, Spidel scored her first goal two minutes into the final 40 minutes with the assist from Brandi Hunter. Cromer scored her second goal of the match one minute later with a header off a corner kick by Scott.
Hunter added a goal to make it a five-goal lead with 12:00 remaining, and two minutes later, Spidel kicked the ball from 15 yards out, past the keeper for her second goal of the half.
For PHS, Liz Fernandez had 10 saves.
LC is scheduled to play again on Wednesday, Aug. 22 when they travel to Ripley at 6:30 p.m. Their game will follow the boys match.
