Lady Mustangs finish district runners-up

THE PLAINS — On a wind, rainy and cold Saturday at Athens High School, the Lynchburg-Clay Lady Mustangs had their season come to a close by a 5-2 score to the Coshocton Lady Redskins in a Division III SE District Final.
This was another positive season for the Lady Mustangs as they end the year at 13-5-1 overall, with a Southern Hills League and sectional championship and a district runner-up trophy.
Coshocton is ranked No. 9 in the OSSCA State Girls Soccer Poll.
"This was a good season," LC coach Dennis West said. "We just came out flat at the start, and they jumped on us. We played better in the second half."
LC trailed early and just couldn't catch up to No 1 seeded CHS (17-1) at R. Basil Rutter Field as the Lady Redskins led 4-0 at one point in the match, including a halftime score of 2-0.
"We had defensive breakdowns, and two or three of those breakdowns cost us goals. If you have breakdowns like that, they will come back to haunt you," West said.
The two LC goals came from senior Taylor Scott as she was determined to score her first goal of the match by getting past CHS defenders with the ball going past the keeper. The goal by Scott came with 20:59 left in the second half.
Scott's second goal came with 11:34 left in regulation from 15 yards away to the left side of the net.
Though she scored two goals … they were too little, too late for LC as their defense couldn't contain the faster CHS team as they scored first in the opening 40 minutes with 36:02 on the scoreboard when Nikki Carling made it a 1-0 score.
[[In-content Ad]]The Lady Redskins made it a 2-0 lead when Emily Hartley scored the first of three goals in the match with 5:05 left in the first half.
Carling made it a 3-0 lead with 39:37 left in the second half, and the score went to the aforementioned four-goal advantage with Hartley putting the ball to the back of the net with 24:34 on the scoreboard.
The final goal by CHS came with 17:23 remaining when Hartley scored her third goal for a then-five goal lead.
Emma Setty totaled five saves for the Lady Mustangs, and for CHS, Hannah Michael had seven saves.
West also wanted to speak about Sydney Cromer's play.
"She's played outstanding soccer all season," he said. "She continued that play (Saturday) in the midfield, and she's going to be our leader next year as a junior."
Seniors for LC are Brandi Hunter, Taylor Scott, Hannah West, Emma Setty and Ryleigh Jackson.
"This is a good group, and they will be missed," West said. "The five played hard and set a good example for the younger players that will be retiring next season.
"We'll be back here. We have a great eighth grade class, and mix that with who we have returning from this season, we'll be competitive."
The Lady Redskins will face Zane Trace in the regional semifinals as they defeated West Muskingum, 1-0.
