Shots just wouldn't fall in the back of the net for the Lynchburg-Clay Lady Mustangs, and that resulted in the end of their record-breaking season, falling in the Division III Regional Finals, 2-0 Saturday to Middletown Bishop Fenwick at Bellbrook High School.
The loss leaves the Lady Mustangs as regional runners-up for the second time in school history, as this year's team finishes 19-1-1 overall, with the tie coming against Hillsboro in the regular season and the lone loss in the regional final.
This season, the Lady Mustangs scored 104 goals and held their opponents to 10 goals on the season as they finished undefeated in the Southern Hills Athletic Conference (7-0), while winning sectional and district championships.
"It was a great season for the girls," coach Dennis West said. "Of course they were upset with the loss, but 19 wins with one loss and a tie is something to be very proud of.
"They had the most wins in school history, and it was an exceptional year. We just ran into a school with one of the better programs in the state."
This season, LC also had 14 shutouts in 21 matches.
As for the regional final match, West said Middletown Bishop Fenwick had speed at every position.
"They are a very good team all-around," West said. "They returned a lot of players from their state championship team. Our girls were a little nervous. We were in a defensive mode and struggled to get going."
LC trailed 2-0 at halftime.
"We got a few shots off, but they scored when we got crossed up on defense, and the other was off a free kick," West said. "The rest of the game was even, but we just couldn't get an offense going."
LC will lose three seniors from the team in Sarah Spidel, Sarah Rosselott and Megan Pointer.

"The seniors have a lot to be proud of," West said. "The Sarahs were a part of over 50 wins in their four years here."
This season, the Lady Mustangs won 11 games in a row, had their lone tie and followed that with another winning streak of eight wins.
"Nineteen wins … I'll take that any time," West said. "The girls did an a great job this season. They reached the final eight teams left in the state, and, again, have a lot to be proud of.
"We were disappointed with the loss, but the girls did quite well this season."
West also spoke about next season.
"We are extremely happy as to what we have to look forward to next season," he said. "We'll be able to fill a full JV schedule for the first time ever, and we can continue to build on the success of this season and the success of past seasons.
"We feel like we are one of the elite programs of the SE District, and this season set a high standard for future teams and gives us something to work toward."
The team and coaches also wanted to say thanks to those behind the scenes.
"We can't thank the fans, parents and boosters enough for all they did for us this season," West said. "They went overboard with their support in the tournament run, and we can't say thank you enough for everything."
