Lady Mustangs earn SHL win, top Fayetteville

FAYETTEVILLE — Though the Lynchburg-Clay Lady Mustangs allowed their first goal of the season, it didn't matter much in the win column as the LC offense scored three times for a 4-1 win over the Fayetteville Lady Rockets for a Southern Hills League victory, Saturday.
The Lady Mustangs (1-0, 3-0) led 2-1 at the half and scored two more goals for their four total. Defensively in the second half, LC held the Lady Rockets scoreless, as this season through three games LC's defense has held teams scoreless five of six periods, which equals 200 minutes of play.
"This was a very good team effort to start league play," LC coach Dennis West said. "The defense continues to play well, and our passing game offensively is leading to good scoring opportunities.
"The team is getting better with every match."

LC, who out-shot the Lady Rockets 17-10 scored the match's first goal when Taylor Scott beat a defender with 34:42 left on the clock. Fayetteville's Kortney Busam tied the score at 31:14, kicking the ball to the net from 25 yards away over the keeper.
Brandi Hunter put LC ahead 2-1 as she beat a defender with 9:11 left in the first half.
In the second half, Shelby Stewart scored two goals for LC at 9:49 and 2:55, with the first goal assisted by Sarah Spidel on a through ball.
At the goal, Emma Setty totaled seven saves, and Fayetteville's Cheyenne Ramey totaled 10.
LC is scheduled to play again on Monday, Aug. 27 when they travel to face the Eastern Brown Lady Warriors at 4:30 p.m.
