Lady Mustangs earn 6th shutout of season

DODSONVILLE — The offense of the Lynchburg-Clay scores the goals and the defense doesn't allow any as the Lady Mustangs recorded their sixth shutout of the season, defeating the Eastern Brown Lady Warriors 4-0 Wednesday at LCHS.
In seven games this season, LC has allowed just one goal, moving to 7-0 on the season and 2-0 in the Southern Hills League as the match against EB was their non-league meeting of the season. This was the first match for LC in over a week due to the layoff for the Highland County Fair.
"Our girls played an excellent match after being off for a week for the fair," LC coach Dennis West said. "We had two practices during the week, both at 8 a.m."
The defense of LC allowed EB just 10 shots the entire 80-minute match as keeper Bree Gragg had eight saves at goal.
"Eastern is consistently a good program, so when you beat them and hold them scoreless, you know you had a good effort," West said. "To be honest, I wasn't sure what to expect headed into the game, but I told a lot of the younger kids what to expect and reminded them this a big rivalry for both teams."
LC scored two goals in each half, including a total of two goals by junior Taylor Scott and one each by junior Brandi Hunter and senior Karen Hilt.
Hunter was first to score for the Lady Mustangs, putting the ball into the net with 30:10 left in the first half. The assist was credited to Hilt.
At the 24:31 mark, LC made it a 2-0 score with Scott scoring a goal, with the assist credited to senior Brooke Hertlein.
In the second half, Scott scored her second goal with 33:20 remaining in the match with Hunter earning the assist.
The final LC goal was from Hilt, with the goal being unassisted, putting LC up four goals.
"We told the girls this is a type of match they weren't used to playing in," West said. "They responded well, and I was very pleased with the performance at a high level."
LC's defense fought for the shutout in the final minute with the Lady Warriors attempting shots at the goal, but all were unsuccessful.
The Lady Mustangs outshot EB 16-10, with LC attempting four corner kicks. LC had one yellow card with 29 minutes remaining in the second half.
In their game before fair break, LC was victorious 4-0 at Ripley.
The Sept. 2 game saw LC score three times in the second half to seal the win.
Scoring against Ripley were Hilt and Hunter, along with two goals from Scott.
Hilt scored the first half goal, followed by a goal from Hunter and two consecutive goals by Scott.
Against Ripley, Gragg had four saves as LC outshot Ripley 28-8.
LC will play again on Friday as they will host North Adams.
