Lady Mustangs drop 2nd straight game

FAYETTEVILLE — The first half was productive for the Lynchburg-Clay Lady Mustangs … the rest of the game wasn't much for the visitors to talk about as LC fell to the host Fayetteville, 68-42 Thursday.
The loss at Fayetteville is the second straight loss for the Lady Mustangs as they hadn't played in a week since their loss vs. North Adams. Thursday's game opened up well for the Lady Mustangs as their defense held Fayetteville to seven points, while LC scored 11 in the first quarter of their Southern Hills Athletic Conference matchup.
This season through seven games, Fayetteville has outscored their opposition 542-257, more than doubling the output of their opponents.
For the rest of the game, the Lady Mustangs (4-2) were held to 31 points, while the Lady Rockets pounded out 61 points in the final three frames.
Before the game even started for LC, they lost one of their players as Madysyn Creighton was injured during warm-ups with an ankle injury.
"We were ready to play and ready to go for this game, and that showed in the first quarter," LC head coach Whitney Lewis said. "Then the same thing happened (Thursday) as it did against North Adams, and that was when we got down, we crumbled.
"We can't get down against good teams and not continue to fight back. We'll get back at it. We've had two tough losses, but we have to get ready for Monday, forget about this and go from there."
The winner of the first quarter was the Lady Mustangs as they tied the game at two, took the lead twice and held their high-scoring opponent to single digits. Scoring for LC in the frame were Morgan Fittro, Sarah Rosselott, Shelby Stewart and Laney Lewis. Stewart's points came off a 3-pointer with 3:06 in the quarter.
Leading LC in scoring was Lewis with 22 points, with 16 of those points coming in the second half. Lewis totaled 10 rebounds (four offensive), four steals and two blocks for her fourth double-double, as she has also posted a triple-double this season.
The rest of the Lady Mustangs totaled 20 points with Rosselott (five rebounds) scoring six and Fittro finishing with four.[[In-content Ad]]
Then the remainder of the game took place, and it was all Fayetteville as they took the lead in the second quarter with 5:35 on the clock and never trailed for the rest of the game.
In the second for the Lady Rockets, Ashley Scoggins and Megan Eyre each made a 3-pointer, putting Fayetteville ahead 20-15 with 4:46 on the clock.
From there, the Lady Mustangs trailed 26-17, then managed to score the final three points of the quarter with a free throw from Ali Little and a layup off an inbounds pass from Little to Lewis for the 26-20 score.
In the final two quarters, Fayetteville outscored LC 17-10 and 23-12.
Other final scoring totals for the Lady Mustangs were Ginny Gadzinski, Little (five rebounds, two steals and one block) and Stewart with three points each and Madison Wills with one.
LC was 10-of-25 from the free-throw line. From the field, the Lady Mustangs shot 27 percent with 25 turnovers, 24 rebounds, three blocks and 18 fouls.
As for the Lady Rockets, they were led by Makayla Rosselot with 21 points, with 12 points in the second half. Eyre followed with 11 points. Lincoln Smyth and Carly Burroughs each scored 10 points.
Also scoring for FHS were Emily Burroughs with six, Alex Carson with five, Scoggins with three and Claire Carson with two.
Fayetteville was 11-of-17 from the free-throw line.
In the JV game, LC lost to Fayetteville, 43-17. Leading Fayetteville was Samantha Murphy with 22, and leading LC was Sarah Spidel with seven.
LC will play again on Monday, Dec. 17 as they host West Union.
