Lady Mustangs dominate season opener

DODSONVILLE — The first 40 minutes told the story in the season opener between the Lynchburg-Clay Lady Mustangs and the McClain Lady Tigers.
LC scored eight times in the first half and seven more times in the final 40 minutes, en route to a 15-0 non-league win over the Lady Tigers, Monday at Lynchburg-Clay High School.
LC senior forward Brandi Hunter and sophomore forward Sarah Spidel each had a hat-trick for LC, scoring three goals each.
"Our girls played very well," Lynchburg-Clay coach Dennis West said. "This is the deepest team I've ever had, and that includes the team that went to the regionals.
"We are all looking forward to this season."
The Lady Mustangs (1-0) started their scoring early in the opening half with the first score of the '11 season coming with an unassisted goal from junior forward Taylor Scott.
The second and third goals by LC came at the 35:22 and the 33:30 marks when Hunter made the score 3-0 by scoring two goals, with assists from freshman midfielder Kenna Oaks and Scott.
Spidel increased the Lady Mustangs' lead to four goals with a goal close to the net. The assist was credited to senior midfielder Karen Hilt with 19:34 left in the opening half.
The score went to a five-goal lead when freshman midfielder Sydney Cromer added to the lead with the assist from Spidel.
The final three goals of the first half came in the final 7:45 with freshman forward Sam Whitenack, junior Hannah West and Hilt all scoring goals.
Whitenack's goal came with 7:45 remaining with the assist from Hunter. West's goal was unassisted with 2:08 left in the opening 40 minutes, and Hilt was assisted by freshman forward Shelby Stewart at the 1:05 mark, with her goal coming from a header.
LC scored a goal early in the second half (35:56) with Cromer scoring her second goal of the game.
Hunter's third goal came with 29:32 remaining in the match, followed with a goal from senior Alyssia Reynolds from 20 yards out with 25:28 left in the final half.
Two of the final three goals were scored by Spidel at the 12:00 and 3:00 mark for the hat-trick. MHS scored an own goal with 11:19 left in the half.
The LC shutout at goal was a combined effort from keepers freshman Bree Gragg and junior Emma Setty.
West did praise the work ethic and attitude of the Lady Tigers following the game.
"We really appreciate Greenfield, and we like playing them," West said. "They are a class act and a good group of girls. I'd really like to see their program grow because all four of the girls soccer programs in Highland County are good programs."
LC will play again on Wednesday when they face the Ripley Lady Blue Jays in a non-league game. On Saturday they will host the Fairfield Lady Lions at 11 a.m.
MHS will host the London Red Raiders on Tuesday at McClain Field in a South Central Ohio League contest.
