Lady Mustangs control middle 16 minutes for win over HHS

HILLSBORO — In the night cap of the 2011-12 Highland County Girls Basketball Shootout, the Lynchburg-Clay Lady Mustangs (though starting slow) controlled the second and third quarters of play for a 47-31 win Wednesday over the Hillsboro Lady Indians at HHS.
The game, in which HHS was the away team on their own court, saw a close first frame with HHS earning a 10-8 lead after eight minutes.
Then as has happened in previous games this year, shots wouldn't fall for the Lady Indians, and the Lady Mustangs were there waiting to take full advantage.
LC (4-3) outscored the Lady Indians 15-5 in the second frame for a 23-15 halftime lead and then took complete control of the non-league contest by scoring 17 points in the third for a lead of 40-24.
HHS and LC each scored seven points in the final eight minutes.
"This was a physical basketball game all the way through," LC head coach Whitney Lewis said. "We looked to our bigger kids inside (Wednesday) where we had the height advantage.
"They (HHS) played us in man, and we wanted to take advantage of that."
The first frame was the most competitive for the two Highland County teams, as each defense played just as an important role as the offense with the first points not arriving until the 4:37 mark of the quarter. Those points came when Brooke Hertlein put LC on the board.
Her points were followed by a 3-pointer from Karen Hilt, increasing the Lady Mustangs' lead to 5-0 with 4:15 to play in the first.
Hillsboro's Whitney Earley put HHS on the board with a layup, but more points from Hertlein moved the LC back to five points. Hertlein led all scorers with 12 points.
"Brooke led us in scoring, and I give her kudos," Lewis said. "She wasn't feeling well, but she's a hard-nosed kid, and she wanted in there as much as she could. She had to sub a little bit more than she's used to, but she was fighting through it."
Then HHS (1-7) turned the game level up a notch with consecutive points by Taylor Moberly, Kaylynn Bell, Carey Juillerat and a three-point play from Earley, putting HHS in the driver's seat at 10-7 with 1:43 left in the opening quarter.
Bell led HHS with 11 points, followed by Earley and Juillerat with five points each.
As the second quarter began, the Lady Mustangs didn't hold back, tying the score at 10 with a jumper from Emma Setty (who finished with 10 points), followed with points by Hertlein and another jump shot by Setty for a 14-10 LC lead.
LC ended the second on an 8-1 run with baskets by Madysyn Creighton, Hertlein and Laney Lewis for a halftime advantage of eight points (23-15). Lewis, who was scoreless in the first quarter, finished with nine points.
"We made some silly turnovers and forced some issues … we kind of panicked, and ultimately that hurt us," HHS head coach JR Moberly said. "I think we've played well enough this season where at the end we should be able to give ourselves a chance to win it, but you have do all the little things right for it all to come together.
"We can't get the basketball to fall for us. We are getting good looks, getting shots in the area where we want to shoot them from, we're getting three or four opportunities at times with offensive rebounds … but we just can't make it fall."
After the third frame ended LC led 40-24, due in large part to balanced scoring as six players combined for 17 points in eight minutes. Scoring in the third for LC were Morgan Fittro, Hilt, Lewis, Hertlein, Setty and Ashley Tenas.
The Lady Indians did score nine points in the third frame, including a three-point play from Juillerat with 4:30 left on the clock. Scoring two points apiece in the third were Danielle Gillman, Trista Rhodes and Bell.
Lewis did most of LC's scoring in the fourth, adding five to her total. Setty scored the final points of the game.
As for the HHS fourth frame, Bell tallied all seven points.
LC will be back on the court on Thursday as the Lady Mustangs travel to Leesburg to take on the Fairfield Lady Lions in a Southern Hills League matchup. HHS will play again on Wednesday, Jan. 4 as they host the Fayetteville Lady Rockets.
