DODSONVILLE – There is no doubt the Lynchburg-Clay Lady Mustangs are improved from the past few seasons, but they just couldn't put an entire game together Monday night. They were close, but in the end, the Lady Mustangs fell in three straight sets to the visiting Blanchester Lady Wildcats.
LC (2-6 overall) fell in scores of 25-23, 25-10 and 26-24 Monday, as they held leads in games one and three, including an eight-point advantage in the third game.
"We're getting better fundamentally, but it is a night-in, night-out thing," LC coach Mark Faust said. "Our obstacle was accepting the challenge … we didn't know how to stop the negative momentum.
"We had a really good first half of the third set, but when things started not to go our way, we didn't know how to handle it."
In the first game, the Lady Mustangs and Lady Wildcats were tied seven times, the last being 15-15. Getting to those first 15 points, LC had help from Hannah Magie, Shelby Marshall, Miranda Gorman and Nikki Jones, who had a tip at the net to tie the score at 12.
Blanchester's Cierra White tied the score at 15 with a block, and later BHS took an 18-16 advantage following LC hitting their side of the net on the third hit. From there, Magie brought LC to within two points of tying the score at 21-19, and LC again got to within one point at 23-22 and 24-23 with points by Magie, but BHS finished off the first game with a point bouncing off an LC player for the 25th point.
BHS took a 3-0 lead to start game two, but LC was there tying the score at 3-3 with the tying point by Marshall with a tip at the net. LC took the lead with an ace by MacKenzie Stevens. The score then was tied at 4-4, and from there, the Lady Wildcats led for the remainder of the game.
"Shelby had her best game of the year," Faust said of the freshman. "She played well."
The Lady Wildcats scored 11 of the final 13 points of game two with Cassie Griffin, Cierra White, Kayla Lindsey and Sarah Burton contributing to the scoring.

Game three was the most competitive of the match with five tied scores, including at points 22, 23 and 24.
Danielle Coleman and Kelsey Clinton helped LC to a 4-2 lead. LC eventually doubled their lead at 8-4 with points from Kylie Camp and a block from Gorman. Magie put LC ahead six points by pushing the ball past players from BHS, and Marshall, later in game three, made the score 17-10 in favor of the home team with a spike off a player from BHS.
The largest lead of the match for LC came following BHS hitting their own net, putting LC ahead 19-11.
Then BHS stated chopping down the LC advantage with points from Hannah Wisniewski and Mariah Bryant, and the score was eventually tied at 22-22 and 23-23 with the exact same move by White of BHS as she pushed the ball over the net in the exact same area of the court.
LC took a 24-23 advantage with Marshall pushing the ball onto the BHS side of the court, then LC hit the ball out of play, making it a 24-24 score. LC then hit their own side of the net to trail by one point. The game-deciding and match point came with White putting the ball out of reach for LC for the win.
This season, the Lady Mustangs have two wins, coming against the Hillsboro Lady Indians to open the '13 season (a best of three match) and a Southern Hills Athletic Conference win vs. Ripley, three games to one.
The Lady Mustangs will travel to West Union in Southern Hills Athletic Conference play, Tuesday, as LC is 1-3 in the conference. In their match on Aug. 27, the Lady Mustangs lost three sets to one at LCHS. Also this week on Thursday, Sept. 19, the Lady Mustangs will host the North Adams Lady Green Devils.
