Lady Mustangs bow out of sectionals

LUCASVILLE — Turnovers and fouls seemed to be the Achilles heel for the Lynchburg-Clay Lady Mustangs Saturday afternoon in their sectional final matchup with Portsmouth West. In fact, those two factors helped Portsmouth West to eliminate LC from postseason play, with LC falling 38-27 at Valley High School in Lucasville.
LC (16-6) was unable to fend off their miscues and lack of converting baskets, as for the game they committed 21 fouls and shot 27 percent from the field (12 percent from beyond the arc), as they were held to nine points in the first half while committing 12 turnovers in that same span, along with nine fouls.
For the game, LC had two players foul out, and two more finished with four fouls, while the team committed 19 turnovers.
This was LC's first loss since Jan. 19 against North Adams.
"That's a tough loss to end our season on. It was by no means our best game of the season and that's what you want when tournament comes, but it doesn't black mark how well we played this season," LC head coach Whitney Lewis said. "We started the season 1-3 and ended up finishing the season strong.
"I can't say enough about how we grew as a team both on and off the court. We finished the season 16-6, and I couldn't be more proud of them for that."
LC won the first frame at 7-6 but lost the second half 4-2 to trail at the half at 10-9.
In the third frame, each team scored eight points, as LC, again, trailed 18-17 after three quarters.
In the fourth, all of the fouling and turnovers finally caught up with the Lady Mustangs, as they were outscored 20-10.
Leading LC was senior Brooke Hertlein with nine points, seven rebounds, two steals and one blocked shot. Hertlein made the lone LC 3-pointer.
In limited play due to foul trouble, junior Laney Lewis finished with six points, five rebounds, one blocked shot and one steal.
Senior Karen Hilt and sophomore Sarah Rosselott each scored four points with Hilt grabbing one rebound, while Rosselott added three rebounds and two blocked shots to her overall totals.
[[In-content Ad]]Junior Emma Setty and freshman Madysyn Creighton each scored two points. Creighton added three rebounds, one steal and one assist. Setty finished with two rebounds and one steal. Freshman Morgan Fittro added one rebound and one steal.
This was the final game for seniors Brooke Hertlein and Karen Hilt.
"As for our seniors, Brooke and Karen ... they will be missed by a program they have given to adamantly. Both of these young ladies are true role models for their teammates and school," Lewis said. "They exemplify hard work and a great attitude that makes a winning combination and great leadership.
"I am honored and proud to have coached, not only these two young ladies, but this entire team. They really are a special group."
LC wraps up the season at 16-6 overall.
