Lady Mustangs blank Peebles en route to sectional title

DODSONVILLE — The Lynchburg-Clay Lady Mustangs began their postseason with a shutout victory, defeating the visiting Peebles Lady Indians by a 7-0 score amid rainy and muddy conditions Saturday night.
The win by LC, who finished No. 9 in the Division III Final State Poll, was one of ease for the No. 1 seeded Lady Mustangs as they led 4-0 at halftime against the No. 9 seeded Lady Indians of Peebles, followed by three more goals in the final 40 minutes.
"We played well, and the weather conditions were miserable for both teams," LC head coach Dennis West said. "Our shooting has to get better. We've worked on it, and still our shots were off.
"At times we looked good with our passing game, and some of our younger players stepped up with their passing. Overall, we played well. It had been a while since we had played. We just need to get on the field and get started again."
In the first half, it was Sydney Cromer scoring first for LC with 31:48 on the clock with the assist from Lexi Waits.
"Shelby Chisman had a tremendous game," West said. "Sam Pierson had a couple really nice shots."
From there, Waits scored a goal with 14:36 left in the first half. The final goal of the first half was by Hannah Binkley with 13:46 remaining in the opening half of play.
The second half saw goals from McKayla Binkley (39:18) and an own goal by PHS (27:18), and the lead went to 7-0 with a goal from Pierson with the assist by Angela McLaughlin with 16:50 left in the match.
Both Bailey Leininger and Sabrina Duncan each had one save for LC.
LC totaled 37 shots, compared to two by Peebles.
The Lady Mustangs (15-1-1) will host the district semifinals on Tuesday, Oct. 21 at 5 p.m. when they will face the North Adams Lady Green Devils, who are the No. 4 seed. NA defeated Fairfield, 4-3 in overtime on Saturday to advance in the tournament.
