DODSONVILLE — The strong start for the Lynchburg-Clay Lady Mustangs continued Monday, shutting out Highland County rival McClain, 10-0.
LC scored at will in the non-conference matchup, leading 4-0 at the halftime break, followed by six more goals in the second half as MHS used three keepers in the match.
Three Lady Mustang players finished with two goals each as LC improved to 4-0 overall (1-0 SHAC). Scoring two goals apiece were junior Sydney Cromer and freshmen Hannah Binkley and Sam Pierson.
"The McClain girls played hard, and I know they are working on improving," LC head coach Dennis West said. "They are a very young team with lots of freshmen … they played hard."
Cromer's two goals came in the first half, the first two goals of the game, at the 37:29 mark and with 19:47 left in the half for a 2-0 lead. For her first goal, she beat the defense of the Lady Tigers, while her second goal came on a penalty kick.
That goal was followed with 16:39 on the clock as junior Keanna Oaks put the ball in the back of the net. The lead went to four goals with 6:46 showing in the first half as senior Sarah Rosselott scored with the assist from junior Sam Whitenack.
In the second 40-minute frame, Pierson scored first with 35:57 left in the match off an assist from freshman Lexi Waits. That was followed by back-to-back goals from Binkley at 27:22 and 24:52 with both goals assisted by freshman McKayla Binkley. McKayla Binkley followed the assists with an unassisted goal of her own with 15:30 remaining in the match.
"The girls who played in the first half sat in the second half," West said. "We played two different teams (Monday) where we played 13 in the first half and 14 girls in the second half.
"It worked out for us well."

From there, Pierson scored her second goal at the 10:25 mark with the assist by freshman Rebecca Stewart. The final goal of the match came from Stewart with 6:35 left in the match. The goal was assisted by sophomore Marissa Mitchell.
LC totaled 11 corner kicks, with eight in the second half.
At goal for LC were Bailey Leininger and Sabrina Duncan with Leininger garnering two saves.
"This team is special," West said. "It is the deepest team I've coached in any sport. They are as competitive as any team I've coached."
For the Lady Tigers (0-4), head coach Luis Rivas is pleased with the effort his team has shown, and the fact he had 19 players on the roster this season, an improvement from one season ago.
"We are blessed to have nine freshmen on the team," he said. "Last year, we didn't have many players on the roster, but what is hurting us this year is injuries. We only have four seniors, and three are injured.
"We are young, and without our seniors on the field, we don't have the leadership we need. We have youth and are getting better. I'm ecstatic to have 19 players, and I just want to keep seeing improvement."
In other games this season, the Lady Mustangs have defeated Georgetown (4-0), Western Brown (3-0) and Eastern Brown (6-2).
LC will be back in action Wednesday when they host Fayetteville in SHAC play. MHS plays Tuesday when they host Miami Trace in SCOL play.
