Lady Lions win in 3 straight over LC

DODSONVILLE — Coming off a tough loss the previous evening, the Fairfield Lady Lions moved their overall and Southern Hills League records back to the .500 mark as they defeated the Lynchburg-Clay Lady Mustangs in three-straight sets Wednesday at LCHS.
The five-set loss to West Union motivated the Lady Lions against LC as FHS won by set scores of 25-12, 25-10 and 25-20, fighting off a Lady Mustang rally in the third set.
"Lynchburg-Clay is a much improved team from last season," FHS coach MaryBeth Hodson said. "They've really improved a lot in a year, and their program is building."
As for her team, Hodson was pleased with the effort her Lady Lions gave against their league opponent and Highland County counterpart.
"We played well," she said. "Our starters played well the first two games, and in the third we started mixing things up, going deeper in our bench. We got the chance to play sophomores and juniors in the third game.
"What pleased me was when we mixed the lineups around, they meshed. As a coach, that makes me feel good knowing I can go seven players into the bench if need be."

In the first set, the Lady Lions jumped out to a 7-0 lead with serves by Sydney Corzatt, along with help scoring from Brenna Simmons and Sarah Putnam.
Later in the first set, LC's Kelsey Clinton scored on a serve, along with Shaylah Bennett bringing LC within five points of FHS. Halie Chain (FHS) put FHS ahead by 10, and as the set drew closer to an end, it was Corzatt and Putnam who ended set one with FHS winning by 13 points.
Corzatt helped FHS build a 5-1 lead with her serving, including some aces, but a block by LC's Taylor Hooley halted the 5-0 score by FHS to start set two.
FHS moved further ahead with help from Simmons and Makenna Corzatt, along with serves by Courtney Hodson to move ahead by nine points at 12-3. Later in the set, Makenna Corzatt and Simmons pushed the lead even further away from LC, and along with points by libero Sirenity Smith, FHS won set two by 15 points. Contributing to LC scoring were Claire Magie, Kristi Hansen, Danielle Coleman and Sawyer Rammell.
In the third set, LC, who is currently winless this year, led 3-0 at the start, and the set was tied at 4 and 6 early on. Alex Cain put the Lady Lions ahead 11-8 in the set, and later on, it became a 20-14 score with a tip at the net by Cynnamon Sova-Davy. Late in the match, after LC cut the FHS lead to 22-20, Arika Melson (FHS) put FHS ahead 24-20 with an ace, and the match ended with a point from Makenna Corzatt.
