Lady Lions swept in weekend doubleheader, first time since '04

WESTFALL — It hadn't happened since 2004, but the Fairfield Lady Lions dropped a doubleheader on Saturday, falling to the Washington Lady Blue Lions and the Westfall Lady Mustangs, both non-league games at Westfall.
Against the Lady Blue Lions, a Division II school, Fairfield was shut out 6-0 to the Washington Lady Blue Lions and lost their second game to Westfall, 11-3.
Washington scored one run in the bottom of the second inning for the early 1-0 advantage, and from there WCH scored two runs in the third inning and two more in the fourth.
FHS had base runners from the third through seventh innings but failed to get a timely hit.
Fairfield threatened to score a run in the third inning, Cynnamon Sova-Davy tripled down the right field line with one out, but the Lady Lions would leave her stranded at the base.
Leading hitters for the Lady Lions against WCH were Lauren Larrick (2-for-3), Shelby Smithson (2-for-3), Sova-Davy (2-for-3) and Taylor Butler (2-for-3, double).
Larrick suffered the loss for Fairfield, as she pitched six innings. Larrick allowed eight hits and six runs (five earned). She also walked three and finished with eight strikeouts.
Lentz picked up the victory for Washington. Lentz pitched seven innings, allowing eight hits, zero runs and zero walks and totaling nine strikeouts.
In game two against Westfall, the Lady Lions' inability to score was again magnified as they collected seven hits on the game but stranded 12 base runners.
To add to their misfortune, Fairfield committed an uncharacteristic seven errors, as Westfall won by eight runs.
Westfall scored two runs in the top of the first inning for a 2-0 lead.
FHS rebounded to cut the lead in half with a run in the bottom of the first. The run came with two outs. Smithson drew a walk (the bases were empty) and scored on a double to the fence in left field by Whitney Hanenkrat.
Larrick would run out of gas in the second inning and give way to freshman pitcher Arica Melson, making her varsity debut. Westfall capitalized by adding three runs in the inning for a 5-1 lead.
FHS scored their final two runs in the fifth inning. Larrick and Sirenity Smith scored on singles by Butler and Sova-Davy.
At the plate for FHS, the leaders were: Smithson (2-for-3, one run), Sova-Davy (2-for-4, one RBI), Butler (2-for-4) and Hanenkrat (1-for-4, double, one RBI).

Cassie Williams picked up the victory for Westfall. Williams pitched 4 1-3 innings, allowing three runs (two earned) on five hits and two walks. She struck out two batters.
This week, FHS will be on the road against West Union, Whiteoak and Portsmouth Clay.
