Lady Lions stop losing skid, defeat Peebles

     LEESBURG – The slump by the Fairfield Lady Lions was short lived as they got back to their winning ways, breaking their four-game losing skid Thursday night by defeating Southern Hills League counterpart Peebles 64-38.

     Fairfield junior Chelsey Riddle led the Lady Lions with 25 points, 18 rebounds (six offensive), three blocks, three assists and two steals for a double-double. Riddle shot 10 of 18 from the field.

     “Chelsey played an outstanding, aggressive take it to the basket style against Peebles. We need her to play like that for us to be successful as a team,” Fairfield head coach Matt Hodson said. 

     FHS senior Lauren Bowman sank seven 3-pointers to finish with 21 points. Bowman also had four steals and four assists. Bowman’s 3-point outburst could possibly be a school record.

     “Lauren (Bowman) has been kind of in a shooting slump and I have been telling her to keep shooting they will go, and against Peebles they did," Hodson said. “She needed a night like (Thursday) to get her confidence back in her shot."

     Senior Gabby Boone finished with 10 pts and 11 rebounds to gain a double-double for the Lady Lions.

     “Gabby did what she always does, right around the basket getting offensive rebounds and putting them back in. She is a battler underneath the bucket,” Hodson said.

     FHS junior point guard Megan Sword gained four points, five rebounds, three assists and two steals.

     “Megan (Sword) handled the ball for us and did a good job of handling Peebles’ pressure,” Hodson said.

     Senior Sadie Jones scored two points, and added three assists and two rebounds.

     “Sadie (Jones) played good hard-nosed defense, causing a lot of problems for Peebles’ pressure,” Hodson said.

     Stephanie Fraysier netted two points for FHS. She also added one rebound. Courtney Huff and Kortney Paris each had one rebound, and Sirenity Smith had one assist.

     The Lady Lions started off the game with a 10-8 advantage, followed with a 16-6 second quarter to take a halftime lead of 26-14. In the third, the Lady Lions scored 23 points and in the final quarter Fairfield scored 15.

     Overall the Lady Lions shot 26 of 53 from the field and 5 of 9 from the free-throw line. FHS gained a total of 42 rebounds and committed 18 turnovers.

     The Lady Lions will play again on Monday as they host Manchester in the Coaches vs. Cancer game.
