Lady Lions open year with SHL victory

LEESBURG — The Fairfield Lady Lions opened the '12 Southern Hills League softball season exactly where they left off last season: at the top of the Southern Hills League standings.
In their Tuesday game with the Peebles Lady Indians, FHS dominated with a 17-2 victory at FHS.
The Lady Lions played an outstanding game, according to assistant coach Tom Purtell, as they set their sights on a sixth Southern Hills League title in the last eight years. The FHS offense was the "star of the game" as they scored 17 runs on 14 hits, as every Lady Lion starting player had a hit.
Peebles took an early lead with two runs in the top of the first inning, as Holly Greene doubled to the gap in left centerfield and Brown followed with a walk. Both runners would score on sacrifice bunts.
That was all for Peebles.
FHS (1-0, 1-0) cut the lead in half with a run in the bottom of the first inning, when Kortney Paris doubled to right-centerfield. Paris scored on a hard-hit ground ball through the infield off the bat of Shelby Smithson.
The Lady Lions took a 6-2 lead with five runs in the bottom of the second inning. Cynnamon Sova-Davy, Paris, Courtney Huff and Smithson all had singles in the inning. Whitney Hanenkrat added a double.
The score broke wide-open with 10 runs in the bottom of the third inning by the Lady Lions, as FHS took a commanding 16-2 lead. In the inning, Sirenity Smith had two singles, Sova-Davy singled, Kaitlin Evans singled, Hanenkrat doubled and Lauren Larrick doubled.
FHS completed their scoring with a run in the fourth inning. Pinch hitter Halie Chain walked and later scored on a single by Larrick.
Meanwhile, Larrick shut out the Lady Indians after the first inning to seal the victory. For the game, Larrick (1-0) was the winning pitcher for Fairfield. She went five innings, allowing three hits, two runs (both earned) and two walks and adding seven strikeouts.
Hayley Pointer (1-1) suffered the loss for Peebles.
Leading hitters for the Lady Lions included Hanenkrat (2-for-3, two doubles, one run, two RBIs), Paris (2-for-4, double, two runs, one RBI), Smithson (1-for-3, two runs, one RBI), Danielle Butler (1-for-4, one run), Larrick (2-for-4, one run, one RBI), Smith (2-for-2, two runs, one RBI), Sova-Davy (2-for-3, three runs, one RBI), Huff (1-for-2, two runs, two RBIs), Taylor Butler (1-for-3, one run, one RBI), and Evans (1-for-3, one run, two RBIs).
The Lady Lions will host the Cedarville Lady Indians Wednesday in a non-league game at 5 p.m.
