Lady Lions drop another Saturday DH

CHILLICOTHE — Another Saturday doubleheader didn't go in the favor of the Fairfield Lady Lions this past weekend, as they dropped two games to the Division II Unioto Lady Shermans by scores of 5-0 and 3-0 at Unioto High School.
The Lady Lions (16-8, 12-1 SHL) were blanked by the Lady Shermans in both games as FHS struggled to put timely hits together all day long. The Lady Lions had their opportunities in the first game, but stranded seven runners, and in the second game FHS had just one hit.
[[In-content Ad]]In game one, Unioto (17-3) scored an unearned run in the bottom of the first inning. The Lady Lions followed by putting runners in scoring position in the top of the second inning with a walk, a sacrifice bunt, and capped off by a base hit by Cynnamon Sova-Davy, but none of the runners could score.
The Lady Sherman put two runs across the plate with a single, a triple and a squeeze play in the bottom of the third inning. They completed their scoring with two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning on sacrifice bunt and an error.
Leading hitters for the Lady Lions in the first game were Shelby Smithson at 2-for-4 and Taylor Butler at 2-for-3. Whitney Hanenkrat and Cynnamon Sova-Davy each went 1-for-3.
Lauren Larrick suffered the loss in the circle. She pitched six innings, allowing five runs (four earned) on seven hits and two walks, with eight strikeouts.
Gina Wright was the winning pitcher for the Lady Shermans. She pitched seven innings allowing no runs on seven hits and one walk, with 11 strikeouts.
Game two was no better for the Lady Lions as Unioto pitcher Erin Ward threw a one-hit shutout for the win with one strikeout.
Unioto scored runs with their small ball game, including two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning and one run in the bottom of the fifth inning.
Hanenkrat had the only Lady Lion hit in the second game.
Larrick (16-7) suffered the loss. She pitched five innings, allowing three runs (two earned) on three hits and one walk, with three strikeouts. Arica Melson pitched an inning in relief, allowing no hits, one runs with one walk and two strikeouts.
In both games combined the Lady Lions committed four errors.
FHS will play the McClain Lady Tigers on Thursday, May 10 at the Fairfield High School in a regular season match-up beginning at 5 p.m. in a battle of South Central Ohio League champions (MHS) and Southern Hills League DIvision II champions (FHS).
