Lady Indians use 2nd half to continue season

For a first half where the Lady Indians of Hillsboro totaled just 13 points, they scored points like a completely different team in the final two quarters.
HHS scored 21 points in each of the second-half quarters, earning their first tournament win in around a decade, as they defeated the Waverly Lady Tigers, 55-31 in their Division II SE District Sectional Semifinal game.
The game was tied at 23 through part of the third frame, but then it was all No. 8 seeded HHS, as they held No. 9 seeded WHS to 15 points in the final two quarters.
[[In-content Ad]]"I was really proud of our girls' effort in the second half," HHS head coach JR Moberly said. "They responded well after a sluggish start.
"We got some big contributions from several players, especially Faith Middleton in the third when we started to get things going."
HHS previously defeated the Lady Tigers, 64-44 earlier this season in a non-conference matchup at Hillsboro High School on Jan. 3. The win Monday was the eighth win of the season for the Lady Indians, moving them to an 8-14 overall mark.
During their matchup this postseason,at Zane Trace High School, HHS, who was the home team, was held to five points in the first frame but still led 5-3 after the first quarter, as Trista Rhodes and Kaylynn Bell combined for the HHS points.
In the second frame, WHS (1-22) exploded for 13 points, while holding HHS to eight points, with the Lady Indians trailing 16-13 at halftime.
After second-quarter scoring from Madison Snyder, Kirsten Juillerat and Alex Stratton, the Lady Indians dominated the final two quarters, scoring 42 points in that span.
HHS scored 21 points in each of the final two quarters.
The Lady Indians held WHS to second-half quarter scoring of nine and six points.
Rhodes led HHS with 12 points, followed by Bell with 11. Faith Middleton followed with eight points, and Snyder totaled seven in the sectional win.
Also scoring points for HHS were Alyssa Sullivan (two) and Taylor Stanforth (three).
Both Juillerat and Stratton each finished with six points apiece.
"Alex made a couple of key plays in the fourth to help us maintain momentum," Moberly said. "Taylor Moberly and Taylor Stanforth, and Trista (Rhodes) also made big contributions at different times throughout the game. First they helped us stay in the game despite the sluggish start, and then later to help us build the lead.
"Kaylynn got off to a rough start but recovered in the second half."
HHS was 9-of-13 from the free-throw line, while they committed 17 turnovers.
Hannah Martin led WHS with 10 points, followed by Kilee Perdue with eight.
The Lady Indians will play in their sectional final on Saturday, Feb. 16 at ZTHS, as they will take on the co-South Central Ohio League champion, Miami Trace at 1 p.m. MT is the No. 1 seed in the sectional. HHS lost two times this year to MTHS.
"We are excited about the tournament win," Moberly said. "Our girls recognize the significance, and we all hope that we can build off of this for the future."
