Lady Indians unable to stop Clinton-Massie

HILLSBORO — After tying twice last season when the Hillsboro Lady Indians and Clinton-Massie Lady Falcons shared the South Central Ohio League crown, it seemed as though the Lady Falcons were having none of that Tuesday in Hillsboro.
After being shutout in the first half, HHS (2-1, 3-1) was unable to get into any type of groove against the visiting Lady Falcons, but the opposite could be said for CM as they played a physical brand of soccer at Richards Memorial Field, and it worked to a tee as they scored two more goals in the second half for a 3-1 SCOL win.
"Fundamentals hurt us," HHS head coach Leslie Molen said. "We must be able to convert shots for goals, and (Tuesday) we didn't do that. We especially have to convert shots for goals against a team like Clinton-Massie."
CM took their first lead of the match in the opening half when Logan Frederick scored on a short kick near the HHS goal with 1:10 left in the opening half for the 1-0 lead.
From there in the second half, the Lady Indians tied the match at 1-1 when Cheyney Myers scored off a rebound near the goal from about 5 yards out with 37:36 left in the match.
That would be all the scoring for HHS.
CM, on the other hand, wasn't quite finished with their offense when Hannah Duncan gave the Lady Falcons their second lead with 31:58 on the clock on a header off a cross kick, leaving 31:58 left in regulation,
[[In-content Ad]]Just over three minutes later, CM added their final goal for good measure as Kaitlyn Barton kicked a goal from 28 yards away to the left corner of the goal for a 3-1 advantage with 28:19 left on the clock.
HHS had opportunities to tie the match (including a breakaway attempt and a penalty kick) but couldn't convert. At goal for HHS, Rachel Sexton totaled nine saves, and Kaylee Achor had one save in relief of Sexton after she was injured in the second half. Sexton did return to the match later on.
"We are not a deep team, and we were a little frazzled and got out of our game plan," Molen said. "We wore out way before we should have, but a lot of that was because Clinton-Massie was a deeper team than we were.
"This game was physical, more so than we've seen this season."
The Lady Indians return to SCOL play on Thursday when they travel to face McClain at McClain Field. Round 2 of HHS and CM will take place at Clinton-Massie on Sept. 20 at 5 p.m.
