Lady Indians unable to contain Washington in loss

WASHINGTON C.H. — A strong first and third quarter by the Washington Lady Blue Lions allowed them to defend their home court Wednesday night against the visiting Hillsboro Lady Indians by a 51-32 score.
The loss sent the Lady Indians to 0-3 overall and 0-2 in the SCOL. Washington moves to 4-0 overall and 2-0 in the league standings.
"We got some young kids who are working hard, playing hard and trying to do some good things for us," Hillsboro head coach JR Moberly said. "They have a lot of ability, they are interested in learning.
"We have three freshmen who are playing a lot of minutes for us, and we have some nice freshmen on the JV team who are improving. We have a lot of youth … we have six seniors and juniors combined, so we are counting on the young kids to carry the program into the future."
The start of the league game wasn't great for HHS as the Lady Blue Lions scored on their first five possessions to take a 10-0 lead with 5:39 left on the scoreboard in the opening quarter. Chipping in on the scoring run were Jessica Guyett, Paige McRoberts, Molli Shaw and Maggie McDonald. Guyett led all scorers with 16 points.
The run wasn't stopped as it turned into 13 consecutive points by Washington with a 3-pointer by Carleigh Chaffins with 2:20 left in the first.
The Lady Indians broke onto the scoreboard with a free throw from Taylor Moberly (1:32), followed with a long-range jumper from Moberly. Moberly finished with five points.
Trailing by 10 points at the start of the second frame, the Lady Indians played evenly with the host team with each scoring nine points. At the end of the half, HHS trailed by 10 points at 22-12.
The second began with Corrine Ryan and Guyett combining for seven points, including four from Ryan and a three-point play from Guyett giving Washington a 20-3 lead with 5:31 left in the first half. Ryan totaled 12 points.
For the Lady Indians, Moberly, Danielle Gillman, Whitney Earley and Hannah Kibler contributed to their nine-point quarter. Kibler scored three points in the quarter for HHS.
"We've got some kids who work hard. They want to get better and win basketball games," Moberly said. "That's what I want for them, and I know that's what our fans what for them. Our fans have been very supportive.
"The kids get their heads down at times, but they get back up and are ready to go the next day."
Then the third quarter happened, which didn't go in the favor of HHS but did extend the lead of Washington to 41-18 after eight minutes.
Washington opened the third with eight straight points, jumping to a lead of 30-12. Leading Washington in scoring during the third was Chaffins with six, followed by Guyett with five and Shaw with four. Also scoring in the third for the Lady Blue Lions was Ryan with two.
Rhodes scored all six HHS third-quarter points.
The most productive quarter for HHS was the fourth as they scored 14 points. Bell added six points to her overall totals, followed by Rhodes with four. Also adding points in the quarter were Carey Juillerat and Alex Stratton.
Bell, along with Rhodes, led HHS with eight points apiece.
Hillsboro held Washington to 10 points in the fourth with Ryan scoring six points, along with Guyett and Shaw each scoring two.
The Lady Indians take the court again on Saturday as they host the London Lady Red Raiders for their first home game of the season. The JV game is scheduled for a noon start.
Washington, who currently lead the SCOL standings, will play again on Saturday when they host the Clinton-Massie Lady Falcons with JV starting at 6 p.m.
In the JV game, Washington defeated Hillsboro 39-16. Leading Washington were Ali Laytart and Emma Anderson with nine and eight points each. HHS was led by Taylor Stanforth and Kristen Juillerat with four points each.
