Lady Indians top Clinton-Massie for 1st win

HILLSBORO — The first win of the any sport is usually the toughest to earn, but on a sunny Friday at Alice Cassner Field, the Hillsboro Lady Indians did just that … earning their first win of the season.
What turned into a six-run fourth inning by the Lady Indians (which included nine consecutive hits), allowed the Lady Indians to defeat the Clinton-Massie Lady Falcons, 7-2 for a South Central Ohio League victory.
"It was nice to get a win at the end of the first week," HHS head coach Katie Moberly said. "This win was against a strong team that we've hadn't had much success against in the past."
The win in the circle went to Ali Stratton (seven innings, three hits, three walks, two strikeouts, two runs, one earned run), but along with her stellar pitching performance, the Lady Indians collected 12 hits, forced four walks, ran the bases well and took advantage of miscues by the visiting Lady Falcons for the win, which improved HHS to 1-3 overall (1-1 in the SCOL).
"Ali is a freshman, and for the first three innings only allowed one runner on the bases," Moberly said. "She had to fight back in the fourth inning ... we made an error, but the entire team was able to get back and focus."
Hillsboro scored their first run in the bottom of the third inning, with Amber Everhart gaining a base hit to open the inning. She scored on a ground out by Sara Sexton for the one-run advantage. Everhart finished 3-for-4 with two runs.
CM tied the game at 1-1 with a run scored by Lauer, but the score didn't stay tied for long.
In the HHS half of the fourth, with one out, Katie Baker (2-for-3), Stratton and Whitney Earley all reached the bases, with Earley plating Baker, and Sara Ray knocking in a run on a base hit that flew through the the shortstop-third base area.
With the bases loaded, Kayla Deatley singled (on an 0-2 count) knocking in two runners. Before the entire inning was completed, Baker, Stratton, Earley, Ray, Everhart and Deatley all crossed home plate for runs. In the same inning, Baker, Stratton, Earley, Ray, Everhart, Deatley, Sara Sexton, Haylee Wehrung and Taylor Moberly all had a base hit.
"We strung some hits together in the fourth. We are trying to hit for contact, and hitting the ball into the gaps, we're not aiming to hit it over the fence," Moberly said. "We want to make teams work to get us out … make our opponent field the ball."
CM scored their final run in the top of the seventh.
Coach Moberly is pleased that her team is learning and using the knowledge on the field.
"I like the consistency of the team," she said. "We need to know there are highs and lows, but we just need to stay consistent each game.
"They are learning, and just as long as they keep learning, they will keep improving."
HHS will play again on Saturday at Chillicothe, starting at 11 a.m.
