HILLSBORO — The Hillsboro Lady Indians' return to the court following the holiday break didn't go their way much on Wednesday evening at Hillsboro High School. Their opener was to the one-loss Fayetteville Lady Rockets, and they took home a 59-21 victory in the non-league game.

Hillsboro played close to even with the Lady Rockets at times in the second and third quarters, but that wasn't enough to stop their zone defense and points in transition by the Lady Rockets who bounced back after their first loss of the season last week to Georgetown.

"We worked a week preparing for this game, but we didn't execute what we prepared for," HHS head coach JR Moberly said. "Losing Carey (Juillerat) in the game and having Hannah (Kibler) get in foul trouble early didn't help.

"We didn't get out on the shooter .. we got shell-shocked."

Fayetteville (10-1) opened the game with 14 straight points in the first 6:20 of the game. The 14-0 run ended with the Lady Rockets leading 18-4.

Contributing to the tone-setting opening frame for Fayetteville were Lincoln Smyth, Megan Eyre, Carly Burroughs and Makayla Rosselot. Rosselot scored five points in the run, and Smyth had four points in the opening run.

Rosselot led all scorers with 21 points, followed by Brianna Plapp with 16 points.

For HHS, in the first they had points by Danielle Gillman and Kaylynn Bell. Bell led HHS with nine points in the game. Gillman finished with six points.

Fayetteville opened the second with a 10-2 run, taking a 28-6 lead with 4:30 left in the quarter. In the remainder of the quarter, HHS outscored FHS 7-5, including a three-point play by Bell along with a layup.

Trista Rhodes sank a bucket with seconds remaining in the first half for HHS. Rhodes finished with four points.

In the final two quarters, HHS was held to eight total points as they were unable to hold Fayetteville to one opportunity per shot or stop the transition game of the Lady Rockets.

"We talked about getting rebounds and don't turn the ball over before the game," Moberly said. "We didn't rebound well, and we didn't stop their transition game.

"Offensively, we struggled all night, and we're just not getting any better offensively. I challenged our kids to play hard, and they did play hard, but we are capable of doing much more."

FHS outscored the Lady Indians 26-8 in the final two quarters. Scoring in the second half for HHS was Whitney Earley, Bell, Rhodes and Gillman.

The loss sends HHS to 2-8 overall. FHS improves to 10-1 overall.

HHS will play again on Saturday when they travel to Mowrystown to take on the Whiteoak Lady Wildcats.

GAME NOTES: HHS had 14 fouls … FHS finished with 11 fouls … FHS made 22 two-point baskets … HHS finished with 10 two-point baskets.
