Lady Indians fall to Glenwood
HHS (0-2) fought hard in the opening eight minutes as they trailed by just three points when the quarter ended.
Hillsboro senior Megan Barnes started off the game with a 3-pointer in the first minute of the game. After HHS built a 5-2 advantage, senior Shelby Coyle made the score 7-4 by scoring off an offensive rebound.
The Lady Indians then increased their lead to 9-5 with consecutive free throws from junior A.J. Sanders. The Tigers ended the quarter with a 7-0 run, including two 3-pointers.
HHS stayed in the game at the beginning of the second quarter with Barnes connecting from beyond the arc for the second time in the first half, with 7:03 remaining in the half. GWHS took a four-point lead with a basket by senior Missy Buckley, and then added to their total with points by juniors Mychael Harding and Christian Lykins.
Lady Indian senior Heather Storer, who scored nine points, sank a free throw with 3:26 left in the second, then after put back points by GWHS, made consecutive free throws on two separate trips to the foul line.
Trailing by nine points to start the third quarter (26-17), sophomore Annemarie Stamper brought the Lady Indians closer with a long range jumper.
Storer made the score 28-21 with a jump shot of her own, with an assist by Coyle. Sanders made it a six-point game with two points, but GWHS made back-to-back shots for a 35-28 lead. Storer, who was the HHS MVP of the game, nailed a 3-pointer off an inbounds pass with 2:20 left in the quarter.
GWHS increased their lead to 40-26 by scoring the first points of the final eight minute quarter.
With 5:34 left in the game HHS sophomore Morgan Price connected with 3-pointer. HHS junior Jenni Willey made a basket with 1:05 left in the contest.
HHS will play again Tuesday evening at McClain High School as they take on cross-county and South Central Ohio League foe McClain in their season opener.
