Indians wrestle to win over Tigers; Blue Lions win tri-match

HILLSBORO — The Hillsboro Indians defeated the McClain Tigers in the final of three team matches on Thursday at Hillsboro High School, as the Washington Blue Lions stayed undefeated in the South Central Ohio League, winning both of their matches against HHS and MHS.

The Blue Lions won the tri-match with a 62-12 team win over the Tigers and 33-28 win over the Indians as the matchup came down to the final match, with Skylar Fox winning the match 7-5 in the first overtime.

For HHS, they won the nightcap of the event, defeating the Tigers 55-24. HHS is 1-1 in the SCOL, and the Tigers stand at 0-4 in the SCOL and 9-8 overall.

The wins by Washington move them to 4-0 in the SCOL.

In the first matches of the event, the Tigers gained wins over the Blue Lions by Dillon East (170) and Joe Unger (160).

East won by pin fall in the second period and Unger won in the third period by pin fall.

The second event of the night saw the Blue Lions and Indians battle, coming down to the final match.

Gaining wins for the Indians against WCH were Brandon Carter (106), Ryan Kelly (113), Dillon Davis (126), Kaleb West (145), Kordell Ford (160), D. Schumaker (182) and Dillon Hunick (138).

Carter's win came in the first period via pin fall and Kelley won by a score of 11-7. Davis' match went the distance as he gained a 10-6 victory. West earned a first period pin fall win.

Ford won his match by a 16-6 score against the Blue Lions, scoring 11 points in the third period. Schumaker won 22-15.

"We had a great dual against Washington," HHS coach Nate Horne said. "We knew coming in it was going to be close and had the possibility of coming down to the last match. We won and lost a few matches differently than I thought."

In the final event of the four-hour plus event, the Indians had wins from Carter (106), Kelley (113), Matthew West (120), Davis (126), Limbacker (132), Hunick (138), Kaleb West (145), Craig Jackson (152), Ford (160) and Schumaker (182).

Gaining wins for the Tigers were Jacob Branham (195), Gary Ryan (220), Brandon Davis (285) and East (170).

Carter won his match against MHS by pin fall 10 seconds into the match. Limbacker followed with a first-period pin fall at 1:37.

Hunick won by a first-period pin fall 44 seconds into the match, followed by a pin fall victory by Kaleb West via second-period pin fall at 2:59.

Jackson won in the third period by pin fall at 5:35, and Ford won via a score of 15-7 and Schumaker won at 10-2.

HHS wins by forfeit (against MHS) included: Kelley, Matthew West and Davis.

For MHS, Branham won by a second-period pin fall (3:10), and teammate Ryan won by a first-period pin fall (1:49). Winning via forfeit were Davis and East.

"I thought we wrestled well," MHS coach Shane Paul said. "We wrestled two really good teams. From top to bottom, I was pleased with how everyone wrestled. We are trending upwards."
