EBER — Two 20-plus point quarters by the Miami Trace Panthers, along with miscues on both sides of the court by the visiting Hillsboro Indians, snapped a seven-game winning streak by the Indians by a 65-58 score Friday night at the "Panther Pit" at Miami Trace High School.

The Indians (4-1, 7-3), who also suffered their first South Central Ohio League loss, trailed for a majority of the first half but ended the second frame with a 38-35 advantage. The Indians also led after the third frame by five points, but a 12-4 Miami Trace run in just under the first 4:00 of the final quarter changed everything for the Indians as MT outscored the Indians 22-10 in the final eight minutes. The 22-point quarter was the second quarter where MT scored over 20 points as they added 24 points in the opening frame.

"(Miami Trace) kept turning the corner, and they kept setting ball screens … we struggled to defend it," Hillsboro head coach Brett Prince said. "They got us into foul trouble, and it turned into a pretty good-sized lead for them."

The run by MT (3-2, 3-4) put them ahead 55-54 with 4:15 left on the clock, taking advantage of HHS miscues on offense and defense. In the final 3:00, the Indians unofficially didn't score on seven of their final eight possessions.

"Defensively, we just did not execute," Prince said. "We spent the last few days repping their stuff, and we knew what they were going to run, but they executed it very well, and we couldn't stop them defensively.

"I'm disappointed with our effort defensively … maybe I didn't do a good job preparing our guys."

The Indians entered the fourth with a five-point lead, but after each team exchanged baskets for close to 2:00, the Panthers broke the trend with eight straight points as Trevor Smith and Cedric Pettiford (six points by Smith) for a 57-54 lead with 3:30 left on the clock.

HHS followed with a layup by Devanté Ames (who finished with 10 points), but after that the Indians' troubles were too much to overcome, as HHS lost at MT for the second consecutive year.

MT answered the points with a layup by Blake Baldwin, who earlier sank four 3-pointers in the first half.

Following Baldwin's points with 1:53 left on the clock, the Indians didn't score on multiple trips down the floor, and the Panthers took advantage with five free throws for a 63-56 lead with 24.5 left in regulation.

Hillsboro missed three more attempts at the hoop, but their final points were scored by Trevor Gleadle. MT added two final points with points by Pettiford at the buzzer.

"Baldwin's quick start helped us a lot," Miami Trace head coach Jon Stauffer said. "Hillsboro is a well-coached team … we made some halftime adjustments we normally or haven't made in the past, and our kids executed those in the second half.

"We knew coming in Hillsboro was good, and we switched up our defense and that helped us out. I can't say how much I am pleased with the hustle by our kids all game."

The Panthers were led in scoring by Pettiford with 15 points. Baldwin scored 14 points, and Smith added 12 points as the trio combined for 41 of the 65 Panther points.

If the final quarter was the best points-wise, the Panthers' first frame was a close second as they opened the game with a 24-16 lead.

MT broke the gates open with a 7-2 lead, followed by the Indians' duo of Tyrand Cumberland and Táron Captain pushed the Indians ahead 8-7 with 5:15 left in the first frame. Cumberland led all scorers with 17 points, and Captain finished with 12 points.

After Baldwin sank the first of his four 3-pointers (three in the opening quarter), he followed that with another trey from the opposite end of the court, breaking a 10-10 tied score. Baldwin, again, made another 3-pointer, lifting the score to 16-10, and teammate Brandlyn Decker helped give MT an 8-0 run in a span of 1:12 for a MT lead of 18-10, as the Panthers kept the eight-point lead to end the frame.

Hillsboro's best quarter came in the second as they outscored MT 22-11, making the game interesting late in the quarter as they broke a tie and took the lead for a three-point halftime advantage.

Ames helped make it a three-point deficit with two free-throws, followed by a 3-pointer from Cumberland, tying the score at 33 with 1:57 left in the quarter. Following two points by MT, Chase Gilliland sank two free throws, and Gleadle ended the quarter with a 3-pointer, breaking a 35-35 score with 10 seconds left in the first half.[[In-content Ad]]
Both teams combined for 18 points in the third with Christian Cundiff opening up the quarter with a 3-pointer. HHS added two more points with a bucket by Gilliland. HHS extended their lead to nine points in the third, but MT ended the frame with four straight points.

The Indians finished the game with five 3-pointers, but it wasn't a "usual" night from downtown for the Tribe.

"Some of our misses we weren't even close, and I could see early we weren't going to shoot the ball well from the outside. I've said all year, our number-one offensive key is to work inside-out, and we didn't do that.

"We came out and settled for the three-ball, and if you do that and aren't making them … things won't go your way. We didn't get the ball to our big guys inside and settled for the outside shot, and that hurt us offensively."

HHS will not play for eight days as they will next take the court on Saturday, Jan. 14 when they travel to Greenville High School for a non-league game. This game will replace the Chillicothe game that was removed from the schedule by CHS.

The Panthers will play again on Wednesday, Jan. 11 when they travel to Westfall.

In the JV game, HHS won 43-38. Leading HHS was Reese Leibreich with 14 points.

In the freshman game, HHS won 54-46. HHS was led by Austin Bagshaw with 21 points and Logan Lesley with 14 points.
