Indians shutout by Blue Lions

WASHINGTON C.H. — The Hillsboro Indians are playing battered-and-bruised late in this season. Though they are playing tough-minded, that just wasn't enough for the visiting Indians Friday night in Week 9 as they fell to the Washington Blue Lions 39-0 at Gardner Park.
HHS entered the game with Kordell Ford unable to play due to injury (who is one of the Indians' top players), but to make matters worse, running back Kyler White left the game in the third quarter with an injury, causing more problems for the Indians as they totaled unofficially 188 yards of offense (139 yards in the second half).
The loss drops the Indians to 0-9 overall, 0-6 in the South Central Ohio League; while the Blue Lions bounce back from a 76-point loss last week to move to 5-4 overall and 4-3 in the league.
[[In-content Ad]]"Were missing players right now … and now we are missing more with injuries (Friday)," HHS head coach Brian Spicer said. "We need to keep playing, get ready for next week and see what happens. That's about it."
All that went wrong for the Indians at Gardner Park was the opposite for the Blue Lions, as they led 25-0 at the half. The Washington defense held HHS to unofficially 49 yards in the first half.
As for the Washington offense they scored on three of their first four drives. They were led in rushing by sophomore Tye Smith with 261 yards, along with 48 yards receiving. Smith totaled four touchdowns, three rushing.
Washington rushed for 363 yards and unofficially totaled 432 yards of offense. HHS rushed for 137 yards.
"I thought the kids came out ready to play," Washington head coach Corey Dye said. "It was nice bouncing back from last week.
"I'm proud of the kids and a defensive shutout is nice. This was a total team victory."
Washington's first drive went nine plays for 65 yards, ending with Alec Sparkman racing 13 yards with 8:25 left in the opening quarter. The PAT by Ashley Lovett was good for a 7-0 lead.
The Blue Lions scored on their third drive … taking just one play, for 56 yards, on a run through the HHS defense by Smith with 2:52 left in the first. The PAT was missed for a 13-point lead.
After forcing a punt, the Blue Lions scored for the third time, putting together a 12-play, 65 yard scoring drive, ending with 9:13 left in the second quarter on a 2-yard TD run by Smith. The PAT was blocked by Hillsboro senior Cody Nixdorf.
HHS had a chance to gain some points, but a fumble on a third-and-1 was recovered by Washington's Cole Massie with 7:53 left in the opening half.
In one of their better defense series of the game, the HHS defense stepped up their play with Jordan Mosley making a stop on fourth-and-2 with 5:56 left in the second quarter.
Again the HHS offense lost possession of the ball with Washington's Kyle Garrett recovering a HHS fumble with 5:15 left on the second quarter clock.
Washington took advantage of this turnover by causing a bit of confusion on fourth down. They first sent out their punt team, but after a 5-yard penalty on HHS … the Blue Lions sent their offense back onto the field, eventually forcing HHS to spend two timeouts.
One the first playing following the second HHS timeout, the Blue Lions scored on a pass from Josh Williams to Smith who went 42 yards for a TD with 4:09 left in the second quarter. A missed 2-point run by WCH left the score at 25-0.
The HHS defense kept the deficit at 25 points with an interception by Nixdorf on the HHS 17-yard line with 1:06 left in the first half.
Washington scored on their first drive in the third quarter by building a 64-yard drive, ending with Travis Leisure scoring on a 1-yard run with 4:58 left in the third quarter, building a 32-point lead after the converted PAT by Lovett.
The Blue Lions again forced a turnover with Leisure gaining an interception. Again Washington took advantage with a TD on the ensuing drive when Smith went 24 yards for a TD, leaving 11:52 left in regulation. Lovett's PAT made it a 39-point lead.
For the Indians, White led HHS in rushing with 45 yards, followed by Logan Lesley with 44 yards and Craig Jackson with 24 yards. Toby Warrington had a 24 yard run in the fourth quarter. Lesley also passed for 55 yards.
Next week the Indians will host the annual Rotary Bowl game as they face Highland County rival McClain (4-2, 6-3) at Richards Memorial Field. The Tigers defeated the Madison-Plains Golden Eagles, 56-22 Friday night.
Washington will host Fayette County rival Miami Trace (5-3) next Friday. MT will host Clinton-Massie Saturday at 8 p.m.
