Indians outlast Falcons

HILLSBORO — What a difference a few days can make.
The start of the first week of the 2012 season for the Hillsboro baseball team wasn't up to their potential, falling in their first two games. Fast-forward to Friday at Shaffer Park … they were 2-1 winners over the Clinton-Massie Falcons.
After four games this season, the Indians are 2-2 overall but stand at 2-0 in the South Central Ohio League, with not only the aforementioned win against the Falcons, but a 5-2 win Wednesday at Washington C.H. against the Blue Lions.
"Our kids played much better the past two games," Hillsboro head coach Tim Hunt said. "Against Court House, Brandon Wilson pitched well with five strikeouts.
"(Friday) we played solid defense, and our defense will continue to improve."
This season, the Tribe has scored 21 runs in four games, but on Friday, two runs were just enough for the win, as they committed just one error, a great improvement on their Opening Day effort.
Hillsboro scored both of their runs in the top of the third inning, where Levi Fleming led off the inning with a base hit. He moved to second on a single by Williams and scored on an RBI single by Corey Walker.
Walker scored the second run off a single by Paul Snyder.
That was all the scoring for HHS, as their fielding played crisp baseball, including a game-changing 4-6-3 double play in the top half of the fourth.
HHS finished with five hits from Walker, Snyder, Griego, Chase Gilliland and Fleming. Gilliland's hit was a double in the second inning.
Griego earned the win, pitching 6 2-3 innings. Griego allowed just one hit, while walking five batters, along with one hit-by-pitch. Griego allowed one earned run with eight strikeouts.
"We wanted to get Tyler the complete game, but he was at 110 pitches, and he was already working through his leg injury from the first game," Hunt said. "This game … Tyler was a leader and it showed."
As for the pitching of Griego, he struck out the side in the top of the first, followed with two more strikeouts in the second. The lone hit by CM came in the third, a one-out single.
Griego also added strikeouts in the third, fifth and seventh innings.
Walker came in and got the save by recording the final out on a ball hit to the shortstop that ended in the glove of the first baseman.
In the game, Clinton-Massie threatened with base runners in the top of the fourth but ended with a strong 4-6-3 double play.
"Our defense, committing one error, I'm pleased with that," Hunt said. "We keep pushing fundamentals, and it's something we've really worked on."
"I'm proud of how the kids have responded this week. We had a shaky start, but it's a testament to these kids and how they have focused."
HHS will play again on Saturday at Indian Hill in a tri-doubleheader.
