Indians, Lions race to Top 5 at Ohio Classic

HILLSBORO — The rain held off Saturday morning and 258 runners raced, along with hundreds more at the middle school and junior varsity level, in the 2012 Ohio Classic at Liberty Park.
At the varsity level, the Hillsboro girls placed second overall, while the Fairfield boys were third and the Hillsboro boys were fifth in their respective boys and girls events. Winning the boys event was Kings High School with 25 points (low-score wins), and in the girls, the winning team was also Kings with 26 points. There were a total of 10 girls teams and 19 boys teams racing as official teams in the event. Many more runners from various schools also raced in the event but didn't gain team points.
As for the top finisher of any Highland County varsity runner ... that honor was earned by Fairfield junior (and 2011 Division III State Qualifier) Michael Mangus. Mangus finished in second place out of 144 runners with a time of 17:08 (an average mile of 5:31).

The winner of the boys event was Georgetown senior Nick Mcafee at 17:02. The girls event was won by London junior Sarra Taylor at 21:13. Second place was LHS teammate junior Jessica Stewart at 21:40.
In the boys event, Fairfield, who totaled 135 points, had junior (and 2011 Division III State Qualifier) Blake Hildebrant place 10th overall with a time of 18:23 (an average mile of 5:55.)
Also in the boys Top 20 from Highland County were HHS sophomore DeAndre Steward in 11th (18:25), HHS senior Nathan Boone in 16th (18:57) and HHS senior Joe Beery in 20th at 19:13.
In the girls event, finishing in the Top 20 were Hillsboro junior Alissa Hauke (24:44) in 11th, HHS freshman Reaghan Haines at 23:16 for 15th and HHS senior Brittany Ferrell in 16th at 23:18.
Finishing in the Top 50 for the boys were FHS senior John Cain at 38th (20:12), FHS junior Wyatt Crothers in 39th (20:14), FHS sophomore Dustin Willey in 49th (20:43) and in 50th, HHS sophomore Gabriel Tamborski (20:45).
Placing in the Top 50 for the girls was HHS junior Hannah Opst in 47th at 25:37.
Also running in the boys event were: for HHS — junior Paul Burton (21:10), senior Brendan Eltzroth (21:31), freshman Zach Middleton (21:38); for FHS — sophomore Brant Huff (22:08), sophomore Matthew Leach (23:36); and for MHS — sophomore Tristan Smith (24:51), senior Daniel Addington 25:13), sophomore Micah Mootispaw (26:36) and freshman Preston Smith (31:42).
