Indians finish 0-5 in preliminary round of State Championships

COLUMBUS — The preliminary round of the 75th annual Division II State Wrestling Championships had its ups and downs for the Hillsboro Fab Five. All five of the Indians' wrestlers fell in their first matches of the night at the Ohio State Value City Arena in the Jerome Schottenstein Center in Columbus.
The first match for HHS was the 106-pound weight class, where junior Brandon Carter (34-6) lost to junior Jude Michel of Milan Edison (47-6).
Carter trailed 6-2 after the first round, and as the final seconds ticked away, Carter's left shoulder was injured.
Following medical assistance once the first round ended, Carter was pinned with 57 seconds left on the second-round clock at 3:03.
In the 138-pound class, sophomore Dillon Hunick lost by pin fall in the second round to Dalton Nicely of Wauseon. The win moved Nicely to 44-6 on the season, and Hunick now stands at 35-15.
[[In-content Ad]]The closest match for HHS came in the 145-pound class, as senior Kaleb West lost after three rounds to Jimmy Klosz (40-4), a senior, 7-4. West (31-13) in the third round trailed 5-4, but with seconds to go, Klosz increased his lead for the win.
As West wrestled his match, HHS junior Conner Johnston (25-15) was pinned in the first round of his 170-pound match, at 43 seconds to Brandon O'Neill, a senior, of Bellville Clear Fork. The win moves O'Neill to 40-1 this season.
In the final match of the preliminary round for the Indians, sophomore Kordell Ford lost a heartbreaker, as he led his 160 pound match against Chagrin Falls senior Ricky Kochert, 8-1 with 58 seconds left on the clock in the second round.
As the time ticked off the clock, Ford was slowly wrestled onto his back, where Kochert gained a pin fall win at 3:59, gaining the pin fall with one second left before the second round ended.
The HHS five will all wrestle again later tonight, starting at 8 p.m.
