HILLSBORO — Two straight days with two straight games against the Clinton-Massie Falcons led to two straight losses in consecutive nights for the Hillsboro Indians, as they fell Saturday night, 45-37, at Hillsboro High School.

The previous night, the Indians dropped their game against the Falcons, 49-36 at CMHS.

Though they have two losses in a row against the Falcons (6-0, 9-2), HHS head coach Brett Prince said he'll never fault his players' effort.

HHS (1-7, 5-8) got to within three points of tying the score with 7:04 on the clock and to within five points with 3:27 remaining, but never any closer.

"I'll never question our kids' effort, they played hard the whole game," Prince said. "The other team had a few more guys who can put it in the basket, and in the fourth quarter, we lost track of a couple of those guys and just gave them clean looks two or three feet away from the basket.

"We try teach defensively to make teams beat us from the outside, not give up points in the paint, and when they (CM) got into the paint, they got some easy looks."

HHS was led in scoring in the South Central Ohio League game by junior Jordan Captain with 14 points, giving him 26 points for the weekend as he scored 12 points the game before against the Falcons at CM.

"Jordan was awesome the last two nights," Prince said. "We have to get him some more touches, and a lot of the things we try to do are to get him the ball, and then work off him.

"When guys double him (Jordan) and take him away, we have to have others step up and make the open shots. We had those looks some tonight, but they didn't go in."

The Indians began the fourth trailing by six points, but Austin Bagshaw came off the bench to connect with a jumper. The Falcons answered with five of the next seven points scored for a 31-24 lead with 5:50 left in the final quarter.

Bagshaw was tied for being the second-highest scorer for HHS on Saturday with six points, all in the fourth quarter.

"Austin played really hard," Prince said. "He showed us (Friday) he can compete at this level. I said (Friday) I'm going to get him some more minutes, and when he got in there, he did some good things. Austin has a lot of talent, but sometimes we just have to slow him down a little bit because he's so athletic and so quick, but he has the ability to play."

Again, Captain helped keep HHS in the game, and following points by CM's Cory Saddler, Trey Moberly and Bagshaw brought the Tribe to within the aforementioned five points, but they never got any closer to tying the score.

The Falcons were led in scoring by Tyler Uetrecht with 17 points, all coming in the final three quarters. Uetrecht had a seven-point second quarter and a six-point fourth.

The Indians did lead following the first frame by a 10-8 score with Jarrod Hart scoring four points (the Indians' leading scorer totaled six for the game), Reese Leibreich scoring four and Captain adding two.

In the second, the Indians were held to just two points, a layup by Captain with 4:41 left in the quarter. HHS didn't score again until a put-back bucket by Captain with 6:54 left in the third. HHS was outscored 12-2 in the second but came back to lead the third at 8-6. In the fourth, CM outscored the Indians, 19-17.

Next for HHS is a meeting with Highland County rival McClain on Tuesday, Jan. 22 at HHS. The SCOL contest will end a league-losing skid by one of the teams as HHS has lost seven consecutive league games and the Tigers have lost five straight league games as they are 5-10 overall and 1-7 in the league. Hillsboro's lone SCOL win was against the Tigers (a 44-28 win at MHS on Dec. 14). The Tigers' league win was against East Clinton on Dec. 21 by a 49-38 score.

"I told the kids all streaks are made to end, and if they can't get ready for Tuesday, then they don't have a whole lot of passion for basketball," Prince said. "We'll be ready for Tuesday, and hopefully we can get back into the win column."

In JV play, CM defeated HHS, 26-22 with Alex VanZant leading HHS with 10 points. In the freshman game, HHS defeated the Falcons, 52-13. Leading HHS was Ryan Lemaster with 12 points and Logan Kibler with 11.
